SP, deputies set date for Stuff a Cruiser Christmas gift collection

LEWIS | New York State Police and the Essex County Sheriff's Department are teaming up with area law enforcement to fill troop cars and cruisers with gifts. Their cars and SUVs will be parked, trunks open, at various locations throughout Essex County on Dec. 3. State Police Trooper Erica Riemersma is organizing the holiday gift collection for a third year. "We've expanded and brought in Ticonderoga Police Department officers and Department of Environmental Conservation officers, along with New York State Court officers from Essex County. We never know how many gifts we're going to get. But we've been so blessed every year." Area high school students also help make and distribute fliers to announce the date. "In the first year, we contacted WIC, the Women, Infants and Children program, to distribute the gifts. And we have reached out for families to contact us directly if they need gifts for their children for Christmas," Trooper Riemersma said. This year, they will continue to work with WIC along with outreach for area elders. Families can also contact NYSP Troop B in Lewis to see the Christmas gifts. Toys, clothes, food and monetary donations given to Stuff a Cruiser are shared more broadly with funds also going to the Essex County Office for the Aging to use for holiday treats and dinners. "And some of the funds go to the Office for the Aging to help with heating costs," the trooper said. "We try to include everyone. It's for the whole community." The holiday cheer helps officers provide a festive outreach. "We like to do good for our community. We are here to help," Riemersma said. There are six locations where officers will collect gifts on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. They are: Walmart parking lot in Ticonderoga Dollar General parking lot in Port Henry Westport Mobil on Route 9 at Exit 31 Family Dollar parking lot in Elizabethtown Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home parking lot in Au Sable Forks Top's Friendly Market parking lot in Schroon Lake Law enforcement personnel will be collecting unwrapped toys, new clothing, shoes, boots, jackets, non-perishable food items, and gift cards to distribute to people in need this Christmas season. Donations can also be dropped off at the Public Safety Building at 702 Stowersville Rd. in Lewis at any time before Dec. 3.
