Section VII crowns XC champions

ELIZABETHTOWN | There were a couple of mild surprises at the Cobble Hill Golf Course Nov. 4 in the 2022 running of the Section VII cross country championships. The Ticonderoga varsity boys cross country team earned the Class D title by defeating favorite Lake Placid, while Blue Bomber harrier Lilly Rother upset Peru's Maddy Welc and Saranac's Sienna Boulds, winning the individual girls' title. BOYS Saranac Lake's Sam Ash reclaimed his Section VII individual title in a time of 15:23.6, ahead of teammate Jake Kollmer (15:38.0) in second place. The Lake Placid duo of Andrew Scanio (15:47.8) and Aidan Fay (15:57.4) followed, as the rest of the top 10 included Ryan Squire (Peru, 16:08.6), Andrew Denial (Saranac, 16:09.4), Sam DeJordy (Seton Catholic, 16:13.2), Garrett Beebe (Ticonderoga, 16:13.2), Connor Duda (PHS, 16:21.4), and Sam Bickford (Saranac Lake, 16:22.8). In Class C, the Red Storm kept their title streak alive with Ash, Kollmer and Bickford followed by Aiden Hesseltine (16:50.5), Morgan Martin (17:00.6), Max Hall (17:38.9), and Paul Fogarty (17:41.8). Also qualifying for the Class C state team were Squire, Denial, Duda, Dean Dormann (Saranac, 16:37.3), and George Cortright (PHS, 16:56.0). While Lake Placid had the first two Class D runners cross the line, Ticonderoga was able to bring five runners to the finish line before the Blue Bombers got to four, with Garrett Beebe (16:13.2), Christopher Facteau (16:52.5), Ollie Porter (18:36.0), Connor Belden-Schar (18:58.0), Brady Leerkes (19:08.9), Carter Mack (19:17.6), and Issac Burke (19:31.2) completing the field for the sectional champions. Scanio, Fay, DeJordy, Max Grafstein (Seton Catholic, 16:35.5), and Sawyer VanBuren (Moriah/Boquet Valley, 18:21.0) will join the Sentinel runners at the state meet. GIRLS In a race to the wire, Lake Placid's Rother was able to get the most out of her final kick, edging Welc of Peru out at the line by a time of 18:31.0 to 18:32.2. Laura Denial and Sienna Boulds took the next two individual spots for Saranac in times of 18:53.6 and 19:06.6, while the rest of the top 10 included Avery Blanchard (Ticonderoga, 19:20.2), Ophelia Breen (Peru, 19:45.1), Gillian Miner (Saranac, 20:05.8), Astacia Bruno (Saranac Lake, 20:20.2), Kai McKinnon (Lake Placid, 20:24.3), and Phoebe Peer (Saranac Lake, 20:26.4). The Chiefs will return to the state championships after winning the Class C team title with a squad of Denial, Boulds, Miner, Kaelyn Fay (20:45.6), Zoe Rainville (21:26.7), Molly Denis (21:33.2), and Hannah Hamel (23:16.3). Also making the Class C team were Welc, Breen, Bruno, Peer, and Alex Cone (NCCS, 20:47.0). The Blue Bombers also kept their claim on the Class D team championship led by Rother, McKinnon, Harley Cohen (20:50.0), Holly Erenstone (22:13.4), Jenna Fay (22:22.0), Mya Marshall (25:09.2), and Erin Roth (31:40.7). Four Ticonderoga runners will compete at the state meet in Avery Blachard (19:20.2), Hannah Porter (21:40.1), Isabelle Burroughs (21:46.4), and Aimee Parent (21:46.8). They will also be joined by Moriah Boquet Valley's Kiera Callahan (20:35.9). The NYSPHSAA state cross country championships will take place Saturday, Nov. 12, at Vernon-Vernona-Sherill High School starting with the boys' Class C race at 10 a.m.
