Clinton County Legislature launches 'Operation Green Light'

PLATTSBURGH | Ahead of Veterans Day, the Clinton County Legislature has announced that the bell tower on the Clinton County Government Building will be illuminated green from Monday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 13 as part of Operation Green Light. Operation Green Light is a nationwide initiative to support veterans and raise awareness about the challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available to assist our veterans and their families. "The Clinton County Legislature recognizes the immeasurable impact and sacrifices that the men and women of the armed forces have made," said Mark Henry, chairperson of the Clinton County Legislature. "The Clinton County Legislature wanted to take this opportunity to show the deep appreciation we have for the veterans in our community, while simultaneously honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifices defending our freedoms. The green light emanating from the bell tower this week is a small token of our appreciation for these efforts, but a stark reminder that we should honor these sacrifices not only this week but every single day." Operation Green Light is a collaboration between the New York State Association of Counties, New York State Council Educational Associations, the New York State County Veteran Service Officers' Association, and the 62 counties of New York State. Its mission is to show support for veterans of all military conflicts, with a special emphasis on the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as raise awareness about the challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families. "For more than twenty years, members of our armed forces have been serving in the global war on terror," Francis Peryea, chairperson of the Human Services Committee, said. "We want to make sure our veterans and their families know their sacrifices matter. It is our responsibility to be sure they are served and recognized by their county government and their community." "200,000 veterans transition from civilian communities every year, and most of them are at higher risk for suicide," said Kevin LeBouef, Director of the Clinton County Veterans Service Agency. "Operation Green Light is a profound way to not only recognize our veterans but remind them that they are not alone. Clinton County is proud to provide veterans with the resources they and their families deserve and have rightfully earned. I want to thank the Clinton County Legislature for participating in this state and nationwide effort to highlight all the men and women of the armed forces." In addition to lighting the county bell tower, residents and businesses are encouraged to join by changing one light bulb in the entryway of their house or business to a green bulb. By shining a green light, veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.
