Eagles remain atop VII/D; continue shutout streak

BEEKMANTOWN | It has been 382 days since a Class D boys varsity soccer team has scored against top-ranked Chazy. And counting. In perhaps the biggest threat to their Class D shutout streak this season (Class B sectional champ PHS has the only goal against), the Eagles got a pair of goals from Peter LaBarge and a solid effort from their defensive unit in a 3-0 win over Schroon Lake/Newcomb Oct. 29. "We did what we have been doing all season when it comes to playing defense," said LaBarge. "Evan Dwyer, our sweeper, played well, got the ball in front and cleared very well. Our stopper Landon Salimando and keeper Zamir Foster also had great games today." "Our defense played amazing," said Foster, who completed the shutout with nine saves. "They only let a few shots onto me and they stayed locked down on (SL/N striker) Logan Bush and they didn't get any really good shots off." Chazy also put pressure on the Wild Huskies early as Luke Moser scored on an Isaac Merril assist 3:19 seconds into the game. "We talked about getting a goal early because Schroon Lake/Newcomb is a great team and they had (only trailed once)," said Moser, who scored the first goal of the game for the Eagles in the fourth minute of play. "We wanted to put that pressure on them and make them play from behind, and that is what we accomplished." "It showed that we worked hard and we wanted to constantly get on them and apply pressure from the start," said LaBarge, who was next to score in the 25th minute, jumping above the arms of SL/N goalie Wyatt Carniglia and heading the ball into the net off a long-serving ball from Reagan Dudyak. Foster made five saves in the first half, one coming off a turn-around trap-and-shoot from Bush that went into Foster's core. Bush also had a breakaway chance after winning a 50-/50 ball, but the ball was shot off-frame. The Wild Huskies also had a key opportunity late in the half off a corner kick, but no attacking player was able to make the final touch before Foster covered it up. After halftime, the Eagles tightened their defense, allowing limited chances in the Wild Husky offensive third and on net. "At halftime, we knew we had all the factors in our favor," said Moser. "We clamped down and Zamir made some great saves, he has played great all season." Meanwhile, LaBarge put the game away in the 62nd minute of play on Merrill's second assist of the game. "We came out strong in the midfield and trying to play around their center midfield," said Merrill. "Once we got it into our offensive end, we did a good job keeping it in." Carniglia made 13 saves for the Wild Huskies. The Eagles (16-0-1) will await the result of the Section X/Class D tournament, who they will meet Saturday, Nov. 5, back at Beekmantown High School.
