Historical society honors Veterans Day and WWII hero with special program

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Historical Society will mark Veterans Day by honoring a war hero with a free program entitled "The Indestructible Man." That indestructible man was renowned World War II Naval hero Dixie Kiefer (1896-1945), whose life inspired the evening's speaker, David Rocco, to co-author a 2017 biography: "The Indestructible Man: The True Story of World War II Hero 'Captain Dixie.'" Kiefer also served as executive officer of the USS Yorktown and commanding officer of the USS Ticonderoga. He was injured when the Yorktown sank at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, and sustained serious injuries in 1945 when Japanese kamikaze planes hit the USS Ticonderoga. Because Keifer suffered so many injuries over the course of his brief life, the USS Ticonderoga crew reportedly said of him, "He's got so much metal in him the ship's compass follows him when he walks across the deck." David Rocco is a community and environmental activist in the Hudson Valley and New York City area and has played key roles volunteering for many initiatives, including the Mt. Beacon Fire Tower Restoration Project. His photography has been considered for the Pulitzer Prize in Photography and the New York Press Assoc. Award. The program will take place Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m., and although there is no charge, reservations are recommended, as seating is always limited for these popular presentations.
