Shoppers to descend on Warrensburg this weekend for 'World's Largest' sale

WARRENSBURG | A three-day festival of frenzied bargain hunting that's earned notoriety via the Guinness Book of Records will be flooding the town of Warrensburg this weekend in a sea of humanity. Defying description, the annual World's Largest Garage Sale will undoubtedly be drawing 40,000 or more people from all over the northeast U.S. into town over three days. The event that's given Warrensburg national recognition will engulf the town with a swarming crowd browsing amongst wares from hundreds of vendors and 1,000 or more garage sales in the vicinity. Whether it's collectibles, specialty or distressed new merchandise, vehicle parts, antiques, old toys, vintage jewelry, household items, electronics, tools, or virtually anything imaginable, it's for sale at Warrensburg's huge sale. The event officially begins at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30 and runs until 6 p.m., and resumes during daylight hours through Sunday, Oct. 2. However, some people will undoubtedly start to circulate the town on Thursday, Sept. 29 for early pickings. On opening day, some vendors are known to begin before dawn, while some eager shoppers roam through town in the early-morning darkness to snag the best bargains. Each day, a swarming crowd of people will not only engulf Main Street, but will pack the hamlet's side streets, and these shoppers will be browsing among sales held by both local residents, their friends, and vendors. The event is sponsored by the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, and the organization's president, Suzanne Tyler, reported this week that the sale could be larger than ever, as the spaces are sold out — and more inquiries are being received than in prior years. Also, a long list of non-profit and public service groups will be hosting tables across town, and one of the new ones is the state Department of Corrections, which will be recruiting prison guards. This booth will be located at the town hall on Main Street. New vendors include a variety of artisanal jewelry handcrafters, plus Adirondack Brewery with their craft brew varieties — they will be situated in front of the stone building at the five-way intersection adjacent to the town bandstand. This beer truck will be joined by several representatives of distilleries and wineries providing samples of their adult beverages. Various new food purveyors will also be selling their offerings, primarily on Main Street, Tyler said. "We're looking forward to another great year — an adventurous weekend of treasure hunting, fair food and fun — There's always something for everyone," she said, noting that for updated sale information, see: Warrensburgaragesale.com. HOW TO SURVIVE (AND ENJOY) THE GREAT SALE: • Arrive early, perhaps before the weekend, and check into a local inn or bed and breakfast. • Shoppers who do arrive on the weekend should get into Warrensburg as early as possible, and take the Northway to Exits 22, 23, 24, or 25. Shuttle busses regularly circulate through town during sanctioned hours, picking up and dropping off shoppers at their intended destinations, at no charge. Instead, use the free parking lots on Schroon River Road several miles north of Warrensburg. This free public parking is available across Schroon River Road from the Warren County fairgrounds and the other is at the Warrensburg High School. Also, the Warrensburg Fire Co. is providing parking for $10 per car or pickup truck; recreational vehicles are charged $25 but there are no utility hookups available. • From Friday through Sunday, there is no parking on Main Street from the bandstand to Stewart Farrar Ave, nor on Elm Street, as well as Emerson, Hackensack, Horicon, and Adirondack avenues and other roadways in the hamlet. These restrictions are imposed to allow access to emergency vehicles. • Motorists are urged not to block driveways or fire hydrants — nor park on private property without permission. Trailers and recreational vehicles may not be parked along roadways in the hamlet. • Dogs are not prohibited at the sale, but bringing them is not encouraged. • Vendors and shoppers are responsible for disposing of their own trash in appropriate containers or taking it home with them. • The sale is held rain or shine.
