Wolverines shut out Mechanicville 50-0

LAKE GEORGE | The Warrensburg/North Warren-Lake George football team demonstrated they are a potent force Sept. 23 as they defeated Mechanicville-Hoosic Valley 50-0, which had been 2-0 in their conference division until Friday's game. With the win, the Wolverines have scored 247 points in their four 2022 matchups for three games straight, the Wolverines have not allowed one point to be scored against them, while they have scored 24 touchdowns. With these wide-margin victories, the Wolverines have earned the ranking as the No. 20 Class C team in the state, a ranking that is expected to move up soon. Against the Red Raiders, veteran offensive threat Brody McCabe, a senior, carried the ball 11 times to gain 174 yards and score two touchdowns. Additionally, he threw a pass to Luke Sheldon for another 54-yard touchdown. Sheldon also caught a pass — an 18-yard gain — from quarterback Caden Allen for his second touchdown — both in the first quarter. Senior fullback Tristen Hitchock also scored two touchdowns in shutting out the Red Raiders. Senior running back Landen Olden also reached the end zone on a 30-yard run in the second quarter. These offensive accomplishments were enabled by the Wolverines' tough defense which featured five interceptions: two by junior Gavin McCabe and one each by seniors Aiden Osborne and Andrew Jeckel as well as McCabe. Also, sophomore Nick Jeckel forced a fumble that his brother Andrew recovered for an additional turnover benefitting the Wolverines. Despite the final score, the Wolverines' defense had a formidable challenge, as the Red Raiders have a triple-option offense. Wolverines coach Mike Perrone said his athletes were prepared, as each of his athletes was assigned a specific strategic role to foil the Red Raiders' triple-option. "We had practiced a super-sophisticated game plan, and they executed it well," he said. "I'm really proud of our players." As traditional, the Wolverines' powerful blocking paved the way for their successful drives and touchdowns. Andrew Jeckel set the standard early in the game mowing down five defenders in one block. After Mechanicville changed their defense to focus on Brody McCabe, the Wolverines turned to Tristen Hitchcock, their 240-pound powerhouse All-State athlete, which resulted in his total of 85 yards rushing and two late-game touchdowns. "Tristen had a really great game on both sides of the ball," Perrone said, noting that Hitchcock can drag tacklers along while he is plowing through them. "He kept his feet moving after contact — He's a punishing runner." Hitchcock led the Wolverines in tackles with eight, followed by senior Cooper Morehouse, sophomore Nick Jeckel, Aiden Osborne, Andrew Jeckel and Max Hohman and seven other teammates. Perrone added that his team's success this year was more than the sum of outstanding individual accomplishments. "Every player on our team had huge moments — Our game against Mechanicville was our most complete team effort yet — it was a really good team victory." Next up for the Wolverines is a game at 7 pm. Friday, Sept. 30 at Stillwater High School, which has a win-loss record of 3-1 in Section II Class C North division play. "Stillwater's a very good opponent, and it will be a real battle," Perrone predicted. "We really have to execute."
