Wolverines overwhelm Granville-Whitehall 65-0

WARRENSBURG | The Warrensburg/NW- Lake George Woldervines had their first big test as a merged football team Sept. 10, and they surprised fans and their coach with a 65-0 victory over Granville-Whitehall. Coach Perrone said he was really proud of his players for their performance on Saturday. "We were expecting a tough game — Granville-Whitehall has some really good athletes," Perrone said. "Our kids were super pumped-up; we had a high-level game plan, and they executed it close to perfection." Perrone added that they had studied G-W's defenses, and knew what to expect. With the Wolverine defenders detecting where plays were headed, talking about what they saw as they lined up, they kept their opponents' yardage gains to a minimum, play after play. "Communication like this is hugely important for us going forward as we take on all the high-level Class C teams," Perrone said. Lake George senior Brody McCabe — the former quarterback, receiver and running back for the 2021 Warriors — led the Wolverines offensively by running for 150 yards on nine carries, receiving three passes for 62 yards. Also, he was 2-for-2 in passing for 50 yards. Starting quarterback Caden Allen was 5 for 5 passing for 80 yards, and he opened up the third quarter running 20 yards for a touchdown before Brody McCabe took over as quarterback. His brother Gavin McCabe, a junior, ran for a 30-yard touchdown in the second quarter, between two executed by his brother. "Gavin is super smooth, and it's a luxury to be so deep in running backs that we can bring him in off the bench," Perrone said, noting that McCabe also executed plays well on defense as a linebacker. "Next year, he will be a 1,000-yarder — a focal point of our offense." Also scoring touchdowns were Landon Olden with a 13-yard run, Luke Sheldon receiving a nine-yard pass from Allen, and Tristen Hitchcock powering past defenders for a two-yard touchdown. All these were scored in the first quarter. In the fourth quarter, Trey Stathis scored on a two-yard run, and Brad Erceg kicked the extra point — a rarity for the former Burgers team. Perrone said with Lake George joining Warrensburg and North Warren this year, his team has new versatility. In prior seasons, Warrensburg was predominantly a running team, grinding out yardage behind efficient, powerful blocking. "Now, if an opposing team stacks the box with eight or nine players to stop our runs, we have the option of passing the ball," Perrone said. He noted that Allen is ever-more accurate with his throws, and Sheldon is a fast, savvy receiver. "We now have a lot of weapons," he said. Sophomore Stevie Schloss, also considered a 2022 offensive weapon, executed an interception in the game. Tristen Hitchcock led the Wolverines on defense, executing eight tackles, followed by Max Hohman with six, Andrew Jeckel and Sheldon with five each, Bobby Starratt with four, and Gavin McCabe with three. No less than 17 Wolverines were credited with tackles. Next up for the team is an away game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 against Rensselaer.
