Student Film Festival returns

PLATTSBURGH | The "Beyond the Peaks Student Film Festival" competition is returning for its fourth round, and organizers are hoping North Country high school student-artists and -filmmakers grab this chance to learn how to use digital media through hands-on experience as they express their individual stories. Funded in part by the Adirondack Foundation, the "Beyond the Peaks" Student Film Festival project began in 2019, initially a collaboration between AdkAction and the Tupper Lake Central School District. The goal was to expand opportunities for local youth interested in digital storytelling. The festival's name reflects how the voices of students from the Adirondack region reach "Beyond the Peaks." In 2022, AdkAction decided to solicit Mountain Lake PBS to take on and grow the project. "Digital storytelling and filmmaking are important to modern communication. These artforms are underrepresented in rural regions," said Jennifer Kowalczyk, director of Engagement & Marketing at Mountain Lake PBS. "When AdkAction first launched the . . . festival, the goal was to create a platform for creative expression and amplify the voices of area youth," said Sawyer Cresap, executive director of AdkAction. She noted that with Mountain Lake PBS getting on board, the project was bumped up a notch by providing more hands-on learning opportunities in filmmaking and television production. Participation is open to high school students from New York, Vermont, and Quebec and is free. The top three winners will receive cash prizes and video supplies. Submissions will be due in April 2023, with a culminating Red Carpet Showcase taking place in May. For more information, visit mountainlake.org/beyondthepeaks.
