Adk. Nationals car show to prevail in Lake George this weekend

LAKE GEORGE | Many thousands of people will be gawking at the gleaming chrome, flashy paint jobs and sultry shapes of hot rods, custom and classic vehicles this weekend as the Adirondack Nationals Car Show dominates life in Lake George Village. This year's 34th annual edition of Adirondack Nationals is expected to feature a record number of vehicles and host a massive crowd — perhaps as many as 50,00 people — between Thursday, Sept. 8 and Sunday, Sept. 11. Car show publicist Steve Farina of the sponsoring club Albany Rods & Kustoms said 1,600 vehicles are entered in this year's show. There will be one display at the Festival Commons off Betty Little Boulevard, as well as on the adjacent grounds of Fort William Henry Resort. Elsewhere in the Village will be as many as 2,000 to 3,000 more vehicles on display — but not entered in the show, Farina said. "Club members are excited about this year's Adirondack Nationals, considering that a lot of the vehicles will be having their public debut," he said. Area officials have said the Lake George car show is unparalleled in the northeast U.S. in its size and scope. There is no question that it is one of the three top events in Warren County, and this year's edition may draw the largest crowd of the three. The Adirondack Nationals show annually features hot rods, antique and classic cars and trucks, "rat rods" and specialty sports cars. Customization ranges from artistic interpretations of original vehicles to bizarre innovative creations, as well as meticulously restored antiques. Some of the vehicles on display in the show have required investments of $150,000 to $300,00 to achieve their restoration or customization. One main feature of the car show is the Friday and Saturday night cruises down Canada Street, which start at 7 p.m. Because massive crowds have prompted hours-long traffic backups getting in and out of the village for these "cruise-ins," spectators are advised to arrive quite early. Canada Street will be blocked off from Mountain Drive to Mohican Street from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. both Friday and Saturday evenings to accommodate these vehicular parades, and parking will be either prohibited or limited to one side of the road on most of the village back streets to allow emergency vehicles to move freely. Warren County Sheriff's officers will be limiting access to Canada Street and the village both Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to midnight specifically allowing only residents, motel guests, employees and business patrons only. All motorists should be prepared to show their driver's licenses or motel keys. Lake George Mayor Robert Blais said car show officials and village leaders were aiming to limit inconveniences and curtail "burnouts," drag racing and other lawless behavior that have occurred in prior years, involving people not affiliated with the car show. "If you are coming to Lake George for Adirondack Nationals, that's wonderful, but motor vehicle laws are going to be strictly enforced," Blais said, noting that local merchants and accommodations fare extremely well annually during Adirondack Nationals. "Those people who break the law should expect to be arrested."
