PLATTSBURGH | The North Country Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a key economic collaboration with U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer. The meeting highlighted the ongoing work, projects and efforts across Saranac Lake, including at the Hotel Saranac, where the meeting was held, and with the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Pendragon Theatre and ROOST. The discussion centered on tourism and Adirondack issues such as broadband and housing, as well as a presentation by the Pendragon of its major plans for a new theater facility. "We are pleased to facilitate such interactions with key federal and state representatives in support of North Country projects and priorities, and we thank Majority Leader Schumer for his time and attention," North Country Chamber officials said after the visit. That stop came just two weeks after another key North Country Chamber of Commerce collaboration with a range of influential state leaders in promoting the area's nationally leading manufacturing hub. TRANSPORTATION HUB TOUR On Aug. 10, the North Country Chamber hosted a regionally important visit by eight top staff and advisors to Gov. Kathy Hochul, focused on the region's dynamic transportation equipment and aerospace cluster. Special guests included James Katz, Deputy Secretary, Economic Development; John O'Leary, Dep. Sec., Energy; Nivardo Lopez, Dep. Sec., Transportation; Allison Bradley, Assistant Secretary, Transportation; Ashley Dougherty, Asst. Sec., Environment; Caitlin Stephens, Senior Policy Advisor, Environment; Caroline Wolfe, Sr. Policy Advisor, Energy; and Natalie Millstein, Sr. Policy Advisor, Transportation. "It showed extraordinary interest that we had eight key people here at one time," said Chamber President Garry Douglas, "including the Governor's top staff and advisors in Economic Development, Energy, Transportation and Environment. They saw and heard firsthand just what an important role our cluster can play in the state and nation's emerging green economy, with many follow-ups expected and underway." The delegation was briefed on the regional cluster and on the role and services of the chamber's NAmTrans subsidiary and took specialized tours at Nova Bus, Alstom, Plattsburgh International Airport and BETA Technologies, where they witnessed a test flight of their electric aircraft Alia.
