Hochul announces ESPN to broadcast World University Games

LAKE PLACID | Gov. Kathy Hochul visited Mt. Van Hoevenburg July 29 to announce ESPN will be broadcasting the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games taking place Jan. 12-22. ESPN will stream about 140 hours of coverage throughout the 11-day event. "This is a massive, massive platform to showcase these talented athletes all over," Hochul said. "I can't wait for that to be happening." Hochul also talked about the $500 million in state investments used to improve infrastructure in the North Country and facilitate the games. "We're in a great position," Hochul said. "We're ready to go." This will be the first time in 30 years the games will be held in the United States. With 86 medal events, 2,500 athletes from more than 600 universities from more than 50 countries will participate. Hochul also showed the design for the medals, placing one on Adirondack Mac, the games' moose mascot. Students and faculty at New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University designed the medals using recycled glass from Potsdam. Hochul emphasized the economic benefits the games will have in Lake Placid. She said the area is projected to make $250 million from attendees, but she believes they will make more than that, emphasizing that visitors will want to come back to visit in the future, after seeing what Lake Placid and the surrounding area have to offer. "We're really looking forward to just welcoming everybody here and I know they're ready," Hochul said. Hochul said she can't wait to cheer on the athletes. "Let's put the spotlight on this magnificent part of our country and of our state," Hochul said. She said having the games in Lake Placid is something she is particularly proud of as a governor who has fallen in love with the area repeatedly. ORDA CEO Mike Pratt; Lake Placid Mayor Art Devlin; Adirondack North Country Sports Council Executive Director Ashley Walden and ORDA Board Chair Joe Martens also spoke, expressing their excitement for the games. Tickets for the games go on sale Sept. 1.
