Mariners name seven to HOF

MORRISONVILLE | Five former Clinton County American Legion baseball standouts — Scott Baker, Peter Ewald, Todd LaValley, ChrisPageau and Warren Horner — as well as program supporters John Burke and Ron Poland, have been selected for induction into theClinton County Mariners Hall of Fame later this summer. Scott Baker was a 1981 member of the Mariners, an alum of Saranac, and a key pitcher for the Hudson Valley Community College team that reached the NJCAA College World Series in 1982, going 5-2 with five saves at HVCC. Peter Ewald was a member of the Mariners from 1981-83, stealing 25 straight bases without being caught in 1983. He was a standout in football and baseball at Peru, where he helped his team win the 1982 and 83 Section VII championships. He went on to earn a letter in each of his four seasons playing football for Syracuse University (1983-86), being named a team captain and eventually signing with the Buffalo Bills in 1987. Todd LaValley was a member of the Mariners from 1987-88, playing his high school ball at Mount Assumption Institute (MAI), winning sectional titles in 1986 and 87. LaValley played at LeMoyne College from 1989-92, where he led the nation in earned run average (ERA) in 1991 with a 0.98. LaValley was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1992, playing three seasons for their minor league affiliates. Chris Pageau was a member of the Mariners from 1988-90, helping lead the Mariners to the American Legion District IV title in 1989 and winning three sectional titles at Northern Adirondack as the Bobcats advanced to the Class C championship game in 1989. Pageau then played college baseball at Schenectady Community College (1991) and South Carolina-Aiken (1992-94), before being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1991. Warren Horner was a member of the Mariners from 1988-89 and again in 1991, helping lead the Mariners to the American Legion District IV title in 1989 while also being a member of the Plattsburgh High Class B state championship team the same year. Horner then went on to play four seasons at St. Rose College from 1991-94 before signing with the Portsmouth Explorers in the Frontier League in 1994, earning all star status that season hitting .332 with 42 RBI. John Burke (supporter) is the current business manager of West Plattsburgh American Legion Post 1619. Ron Poland (supporter) is the former Commander of West Plattsburgh American Legion Post 1619. Current members of the Clinton County Mariners Hall of Fame include: 2012 - Harry Demary, Robert Garrow, Gary Butler 2013 - Joe Staves, Bill Durnin, Tim O'Connell, Mike St. Louis, Pip LaFountain 2014 - Tim McDonough, Jim Shutts, Wally Vanderhoff, Larry Carpenter, Randy Senecal 2015 - John Flynn, Mike Flynn, John Hart, John Rock, Mike Rock, Gerald Burdo 2016 - Jeff Doorey, John Ireland, Paul O'Connell, Dick Denny, Dale Meron 2017 - Jack Daly, Chris King, Stephen Peryea 2018 - John Zerrahn, Peter Proctor, Matt Sames, Tom Neale. 2019 - Jason Miller, Doug Kimbler, Rob Calkins, Todd Wilkinson, Gus Terry, 1969 Team 2021 - Russ Keller, Mark Boule, Neil Stevens, Brian Mehan, Kris Doorey, Bob Way The ceremony for the Mariners class of 2022 hall of fame will be held at the West Plattsburgh American Legion during the last week of July.
