Equestrians gather, compete in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID | From young children on ponies to Olympic gold medalists and every level in between, equestrians from all around the world participate in the Lake Placid Horse Show and the I Love New York Horse Show in Lake Placid. The Lake Placid Horse Show takes place June 28 - July 3 and the I Love New York Horse Show is July 5-10. $600,000 in prize money, as well as other gifts and prizes like ribbons, bicycles and clothing, will be awarded. Participants are not kept track of by number of people registered, but by number of horses. Marty Bauman, who has been doing public relations for the shows since 1981, said a rider can have multiple horses and with each horse comes about three people: a rider, a trainer and a groom. "We have a very significant impact on Lake Placid when the horse show comes to town," Bauman said. "I cannot think of any town that treats the horse show community better than Lake Placid does. I work for a lot of horse shows and I travel the circuit and I think Lake Placid truly stands out as the town that welcomes the horse shows more than anybody else." Each event the horse and their rider compete in is called a class. Classes will take place simultaneously in four separate rings throughout the day, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending about 5 p.m. There are about 120 classes each week. The horse shows weren't able to happen in 2020, due to COVID-19, but they were some of the first shows the United States Equestrian Federation allowed to come back in 2021. Bauman said things are pretty much back to normal in the horse show world and he expects this year's shows to be the way they've always been. In addition to the competitions, there will be a boutique vendor area with products, apparel, photography and local Adirondack art. There will also be booths with real estate, equine-related products and commemorative merchandise, as well as a variety of dining options. Saturday of the closing weekend, they will continue a long-standing tradition called the "doggie costume contest." On this day, anyone in town can bring their dog in a costume and get into the horse show for free. The dogs are paraded in front of judges and about 100 spectators. Admission to the horse shows is $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekend days. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free. There are discounts for groups of 20 or more.
