Fort Ticonderoga introduces sunset cruise for Civic Season

TICONDEROGA | With the deep evergreen of the imperial trees, cobalt gray of the Adirondack and Green Mountains framing the scene, and an opaque aqua of beating water beneath the hull, the Carillon moves about Lake Champlain confidently and with the ease of a happy stroller on a Sunday afternoon. Fort Ticonderoga's 1920s-style tour boat, purchased in 2015, cuts an elegant figure across the other beloved body of water. At this point in her maritime career, she could probably do this blindfolded. She's the perfect lady of the lake for a sunset experience. As part of the Civic Season- a new summer tradition between Juneteenth and July 4th to explore what we stand for- Fort Ticonderoga is offering the sunset cruise to locals and visitors as a brand-new Airbnb Experience. During Civic Season, museums and institutions around the country are inviting guests to learn more about their communities and country, and this is Fort Ticonderoga's contribution to this national enlightenment movement. "Fort Ticonderoga is part of an unparalleled collaboration of more than 130 of the nation's history museums. The collaboration, named Made By Us, is intended to better engage Millennials and Gen-Z with American history to inspire, inform and empower civic participation," says Fort Ticonderoga President and CEO, Beth Hill. It's easy to take for granted the natural beauty that Ticonderoga holds; it's human nature to become desensitized to something you're exposed to with great frequency. However, the pathway near the King's Garden as one makes their way to the dock to board the Carillon, serves as a reminder of all the grandeur found within the Adirondacks. The grand and newly-restored Pell Pavillion looks majestically and maternally over the sprawling emerald grass, while Lake Champlain glistens like old mine-cut diamonds. The sight of it altogether is a treat- and an honor. "Based on our market research we knew that visitors wanted to have access to the water and the boat has been such a driver for attendance with more than 30,000 guests since we began operations in 2015," informs Hill. "It is such a joy and so rewarding to see people immersed in the sites' stunning natural beauty and epic history, making lifelong memories together." In the experienced hands and confident sea legs of congenial Captain Andrew Munger, guests settle into the antique chairs acquired from a theater in Vermont, one more small detail that adds to the Carillon's mystique. The landscape and shoreline having changed only very slightly since the 18th century, and very little evidence of mankind's technological advances in view, it's quite easy to allow oneself to fully immerse and take a peek back in time. Ethan Knick, today's historian and tour guide, enthusiastically narrates a rousing, enjoyable, and highly detailed speech. Developed and crafted by Fort Ticonderoga's Vice President of Public History Stuart Lilie, the script has the challenge of covering events in the history of our nation based on their timeline, but pertinent and noteworthy landmarks aren't necessarily in chronological order. Despite this, Lilie's dialogue flows beautifully, playing out like a novel, listeners' minds engaged beneath a sky full of sunset–kissed cumulous clouds. "Stuart is a leader in historic interpretation. Put more simply, he is an amazing storyteller who is able to weave incredible historical knowledge into a masterful narrative," Hill says. "Ticonderoga's story is epic so making it accessible and understandable for guests of all ages is really important. The narrative developed for our boat tour (and all of our other tours across the property) reflects extensive research and a thoughtful approach which has been refined year upon year based on visitor feedback." Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, Henry Knox, John Burgoyne, all the major players from the Era of the Tricorn Hat are mentioned, snippets of their historically-documented personalities sprinkled throughout the narrative. Mount Independence and the Fort itself loom cheerfully while tales of brevity, great peril, irony, and captivation are told. Sonar imaging is available for the audience to see that a few fathoms below are physical relics from our nation's history, forever frozen in time in Lake Champlain. "Lake Champlain is one of the most underwater archeologically rich places in the country," Hill points out. "Right off our shores are a number of ships that are still being explored." Proof of the tour's powerful impact is clearly evinced through one young attendee. Easily under the age of ten, he is positioned on his grandmother's lap, practically on the edge of his seat. His head swivels like an owl while his young developing senses drink in the visual and auditory splendor. His hand raised politely, he asks Guide Knick a few questions, eager for the answers. "Great question," Historian Knick praises after offering a thorough response to the eager boy's inquiries. That little gentleman will certainly remember this cruise, and ask more questions, for the rest of his life. On into the transitioning sky glides the Carillon, with New York state to her right, and Vermont to the left. From a bird's eye view, it's just another calm evening with life and memories happening at the Fort Ticonderoga peninsula. As the sun works its way towards the horizon line of Lake Champlain, history and civic awareness unite. "Understanding our past, and the sacrifices of those who have gone before us, is critical to informing our understanding of our democracy today and our nation's path forward.
