Major upgrades to Caldwell Sewer District pump stations planned

LAKE GEORGE | The deteriorating pumps propelling sewage from households and businesses within the Caldwell Sewer District to Lake George Village's wastewater treatment plant will soon be replaced, following the June 13 decision by the Town Board to undertake the $1.2 million project. The initiative includes upgrading almost all the equipment in the district's two pump stations including new flow meters, emergency bypass valves and pipes, flow interruption alarms, electronic and digital controls and flow meters, as well as "headers" which are pressurized discharge devices. The town of Lake George has two pump stations serving the households and businesses connected to the Caldwell District's sewer system, extending up the east side of Lake George. Lake George Town and Village Planning Director Dan Barusch said June 16 that a $657,000 grant from the state would pay the bulk of the cost, leaving $543,000 to be shouldered by the Calwell Sewer District property owners, likely with payments on a bond stretching over 20 years. For the last six years or so, the equipment in the Caldwell Sewer District's two pump stations, one located on Beach Road and the other on Fort George Road, have needed repair and upgrading with modern controls. Four years ago, the town board was poised to make upgrades similar to the present project, and the cost would have been about $1 million. Instead, the town board decided to merely rebuild the failing pumps, and these repairs turned out to be short-lived. In 2019, one of the lower pumping station's pump drivers quit, prompting emergency repairs. The construction bids on the upcoming project are to be advertised in the coming weeks, with the work likely to begin this fall and finished by this winter, Barusch said, adding that the payments on the $543,000 bond wouldn't have a major impact on existing sewer district taxes.
