Smith leads Section VII boy's golfers to states

TICONDEROGA | Peru's Keegan Smith and Lake Placid's Brady Tremblay went head-to-head over two days at the Section VII boy's golf championships May 26-27, with both golfers shooting a 78 on day two. But it was Smith's strong start leading to an even-par round of 72 on day one that was the difference, as Tremblay scored a matching 78 to give the Nighthawk a 150-156 two-day scoring win for the individual sectional title. "Today I knew I had some room for error if needed," said Smith. "I ended up being tied at one point with Brady, but I was able to birdie at one of the holes and par it out from there and got it back to six and was able to finish it out." "It was a good start to my day," said Tremblay, who helped lead the Blue Bombers to the team title on day one. "I was able to get up to Keegan, but couldn't finish it. I am going to do a lot of practicing with my putting." State qualifiers Lake Placid will send half of its team to the NYSPHSAA state championships June 4-6, with Chris Byrne finishing in fifth (165) and Grady Draper tied for seventh (168) to make the nine-player state roster. Seventh-grader Carver Bell (171) finished in a tie for the final spot, but lost out in playoffs against Moriah's Logan Gilbo (171), with Gilbo taking the ninth spot and Bell serving as the alternate. Peru's Laim Clark was also in the tiebreaker with a 171. "I had a much better day today than yesterday," said Byrne. "After my round yesterday I stayed and practiced my driver and everything was better today. I just need to work on my woods more." "I didn't have a good round yesterday at 86," said Draper. "I did good on the first front nine and then I started to struggle and my game kind of fell apart. I did good on a couple of other holes which helped my score. I need to invest in another pitching wedge. "I came in and didn't think I was going to get it," said Gilbo. "I brought it to a playoff and was able to get the win with a birdie. I was 145 out and hit it within two feet of the whole with a nine iron. I am going to do a lot of putting." Thomas Clarke (161) also qualified for the Vikings with a third-place finish, with Northeastern Clinton's Chase Leoturneau finishing in fourth (163), Zach Dubray of Beekmantown sixth (167), and Porter Goodman of AuSable Valley tied for seventh (168). "I came into the second day in a deep hole," said Clarke. "I was able to play out of it, but my putting killed me today. I need to do a lot of putting." "I had a better day than yesterday, but I need to still work on my putting," said Letoruneau. "Today I came in with a good position and I felt like I needed to do much of the same," said Dubray. "I shot a little bit better, now here we are. I just need to keep my game sharp." "I came in confident today after shooting an 85," added Goodman. "I had a good front nine, but fell away in the back. I am just going to play more golf to prepare."
