Blue Bombers repeat as boys golf champs

TICONDEROGA | The Lake Placid varsity golf team did not need extra holes to retain the Section VII title May 26 at the Ticonderoga Golf Course. This year, the Blue Bombers scored a six-stroke win over second-place Peru to secure the title for ye another year. The Bomber quartet of Brady Tremblay (78), Chris Byrne (85), Grady Draper (86), and Carver Bell (87) combined for a score of 336, besting the Peru foursome of first-round individual leader Keegan Smith (72), Nicholas Palmer (85), Liam Clark (87), and Connor Sweeney (98), who totaled 342. "It was a pretty good day with pretty good conditions," said Tremblay. "I think we came in prepared for this, we came ready to play and got it done. I was trying to focus on myself with my group and control what I could and not what they were doing." "Overall our whole team has progressed a lot since last year," said Byrne. "Everyone has improved since last year and has cut down their score by 6-8 strokes, and Carver has been playing great golf." "Last year we were all ready to celebrate and a Saranac kid goes out and shoots his lowest score of his year to force a playoff," said Draper. "This year we were able to get the win with this group and Carver has been lights out this season as a seventh-grader. It's been a team effort on a great course and I had a lot of fun today." "It's been really fun playing with everybody on the team," said the seventh-grader Bell. "There was good competition today but we were able to win. I thought there were going to be a lot of players shooting better than me, but I was able to play matches this season and it has been fun." Moriah (357), AuSable Valley (373) and the duo of Boquet Valley (374) and Beekmantown (374) rounded out the top five. Heading into day two of the boys' tournament, Smith holds a six-stroke lead over Tremblay, with Thomas Clarke of Moriah and Chase Letoruneau of Northeastern Clinton tied for third (82), and Grant Weerts of AuSable Valley fifth (84). Porter Goodman (AVCS), Zach Dubray (Beekmantown), Byrne and Palmer are tied for sixth at 85, followed by Draper at 86, Bell and Clark at 87, Dax Lashway (Saranac) at 88, the Buehler Brothers (Oakley and Boden of BVCS) at 89, and Logan Gilbo (Moriah) at 90 in the top 15. Keegan Seamone (Beekmantown - 91), Nathan Hamel (Saranac - 91), Silas Reeder (Moriah - 92), Ben Fredette (NCCS - 92,) Vance Hickok (Moriah - 93), Jack Thomas (AVCS - 95), and Nick Winters (Moriah - 95) will also compete for a spot on the NYSPHSAA state team starting May 27 at 9 a.m., where the top nine will advance to states.
