Motorcyclists to engulf Lake George

LAKE GEORGE | In a blur of whirring wheels and gleaming chrome, many thousands of motorcyclists will be rolling through the region soon — as Americade dominates life in Lake George from June 7 through June 11. Far more than 10,000 motorcycle riders are expected to attend the renowned rally, participating in various parades, stunt shows, competitions and seminars, and motorcycle tours through the Adirondacks. They'll also be participating in cruises on Lake George, attending comedy shows, and taking new two-wheeled models on demonstration rides. Considered the world's largest touring motorcycle rally, Americade is returning to Lake George after it was canceled for 2020, then downsized and shifted to September for 2021. This year's edition of the event is billed as "Bigger, Better and Bolder." Rally director Christian Dutcher said that Americade 2022 is embarking on a new direction while retaining its traditional aspects. "To reflect the shifting dynamics of motorcycling, we've retooled the rally and broadened its appeal," he said. "We're keeping what people really like about it, while we've added a lot of innovative things." Dutcher said the rally's return to its traditional run in early June will be boosting attendance. Also, Harley-Davidson will be rejoining other major motorcycle manufacturers — including Honda, Indian BMW, Triumph, KTM and Yamaha — introducing their new models and offering demonstration rides. A prominent addition to the lineup of brands this year is Zero Motorcycles — they are electric-powered, feature remarkable acceleration, and charge up fast. A new aspect of Americade 2022 will be events and programs focusing on female motorcycle riders, Dutcher said. "Women riders are the fastest-growing demographic in motorcycling," he said. Hayley Bell, 2019 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year, will be hosting a program describing her two-wheeled adventures and her Women Riders World Relay, consisting of thousands of female motorcyclists from 84 counties joining in a collaborative trip circling the planet. She has said her mission is to promote a "global sisterhood of inspirational women." Her 10 a.m. June 7 presentation will be followed by a showing of selections from the Rev Sisters Film Festival. Also, another nationally renowned female motorcyclist, Liza Miller, founder of one of the nation's first community motorcycle cooperatives, will be talking about her group tours of Pakistan. Dutcher has said that entertainment is an ever-more important aspect of Americade, noting that renowned motorcyclist/comedian Alonzo Bodden will be headlining several comedy shows — and the public is invited this year to join the audience of registered Americade participants, for a fee. "Alonzo's shows feature his off-the-cuff humor, and he has a great rapport with motorcyclists," Dutcher said. "His shows at Americade have always ended with standing ovations." Another major attraction of Americade is the rally's open-air concerts of live music — and this year, they will be held in Shepard Park rather than in the middle of Beach Road.
