Saranac cruises to girls track win

PERU | The Saranac varsity girls track and field team ran away with the Section VII title May 25 at the Peru track complex, scoring 200 points, 105 ahead of second place and host Peru. "Today has been going well so far," said Chief Grace Damiani, who won high jump (followed by Andrea Cooke of Ti and Marissa LeDuc of Saranac). "I'm able to go to Nationals in Oregon. It's going to be a long flight and I'm nervous to compete there. My goal is 5-4, but I want to get the school and sectional records. My PR is 5-2." Damiani also won the triple jump with a mark of 31-10.5, Followed by Lily Snide and Siri Sorenson of Plattsburgh High. Sienna Boulds scored a sweep in the distance runs, capturing the 1,500 in a time of 5:11.13, ahead of teammate Laura Denial and Lake Placid's Samantha Damico. She also won the 3,000 in 11:28.6, ahead of Denial and Peru's Ophelia Breen. Marissa LeDuc won the 400 hurdles in 1:12.63 with Northeastern Clinton's Alexa Turner and Breen following, while also winning the long jump in 16-10, beating Snide and Saranac teammate Paige Ubl. Desiree Jean-Pierre capped Chiefs' win with a mark of 95-2 in the discus, with Mia Sanford and Allison Hewitt of Saranac Lake finishing in second and third. The Chiefs also won the 400 relay with the team of Emilee Pecore, Paige Ubl, Madalyn Wynnik, and Olivia Davis. Lily Swyers won the 100 hurdles for the Nighthawks in 17.57, with Bethany Clark of Saranac Lake and LeDuc following. "I wasn't the fastest in the 100 hurdles prelims because there was a false start so I had to run before that, so I wasn't really expecting that," said Swyers. "I lost a lot this season and that was pretty surprising to me that I got the fastest time." Other Peru wins came from Maggie Garrow in the 800 (2:31, Lydia Wamnsganz of Saranac Lake and Faline Yang of Seton Catholic followed), The 1,600 relay team of Ella Garrow, Maggie Garrow, Ophelia Breen, and Mackenzie Arnold; and the 3,200 relay with The Garrows, Breen and Lauren Davey. Haley LaDue scored a sprint double for PHS with wins in the 100 (13.36, Olivia Davis and Paige Ubl) and 200 (27.75, Zoe Rainville and Julianna Riermersma). Seton Catholic got a win from Abby Pearl in the 400 (1:01.48, Ellie Prairie of NCCS and Sarah Lavigne of Saranac), while Ticonderoga's Lizzie Rich won the shot put (36-6, Jean-Pierre and Mia Sanford of Saranac Lake). Plattsburgh High (71), Northeastern Clinton (66) and Saranac Lake (58.5) rounded out the top five in points.
