Girls track: Chiefs strong in victory over PHS

SARANAC | The Chief Varsity Girls Track and Field Team scored wins in 13 events as Saranac rolled to a 95-36 victory over Plattsburgh High May 10. Marissa LeDuc won the 100 hurdles (18.72) and long jump (16-3) for the Chiefs, as the team also got wins from Paige Ubl in the 100 (13.35), Sienna Boulds in the 1,500 (5:36.5), Sarah Lavigne the 400 (1:03.2), Hannah Hamel the 800 (2:48.5), Zoe Rainville the 200 (28.15), Laura Denial the 3,000 (11:37.9), Grace Damiani the high jump (4-10), and Desiree Jean-Pierre the shot put (31-11) and discus (100-0.5). The Chiefs also took the 3,200 relay in 11:27.5 (Denial, Boulds, Hamel, Kaelyn Fay) and the 400 relay in 52.3 (Ubl, Maddy Wynnik, Emilie Pecore, Olivia Davis). "My goals are to get first place and to do good at sectionals," said Ubl. "I want to get to states with the 400 relay team. I want to get more confident in my running and to get our team the wins we need." "This is my first win this season," said LeDuc of her 100 hurdles performance. "I had a good start and finished out strong." "My goal for the high jump by the end of the year is 5-4 and for triple is 34," said Damiani. "We have a really hard meet on Thursday and I am going to use today's race to push me to do better," said Boulds. "My record is 5:08, but my goal is for under five minutes this year." "I love track because it is super fun and I get to hang out with people who are interested in the same thing as me," added Lavigne. "I'm only a seventh-grader so I am being challenged more. It is a lot harder and I like the challenge. I am trying to push myself and get to be a good runner." Phoebe Bruso won the 400 hurdles for PHS (1:18.5) while teaming with Haley Ladue, Lily Clermont and Audrie Bilow to win the 1,600 relay (4:44.6). Gabriella Laundry added a win in the triple jump (32-4). "My coaches have been helping and pushing us on the hurdles," said Bruso. "I just started doing them again because I was injured. The race was good, but the last stretch really hurts. I have to keep on attacking the hurdles. It gets easier after each race and practice and I have to fine-tune it. I just want to get faster." Red Storm beat the Knights A balanced Saranac Lake varsity girls track and field team got wins throughout the lineup in an 84-41 win against Seton Catholic May 10. Lydia Wamsganz led the Red Storm with wins in the 400 (1:05.2), 200 (28.1), and high jump (4-8), while Beth Clark scored wins in the 100 hurdles (18.4) and triple jump (24-2.5), Ama Kujabi he 100 (13.8), Zoe Carpenter the 1,500 (6:43.5), Michaela Gillis the 400 hurdles (1:20.2), Mia Sanford the shot put (32-4) and Allison Hewitt the discus (85-8). Senior Faline Yang was impressive on her senior night, scoring wins in the 800 (2:35.9) and 3,000 (12:04.5) along with teaming with Madyson Whalen, Monique Allen, and Abby Pearl for a win in the 3,200 relay (11:48.8). Whalen and Pearl then teamed with Grace Trombley and Megan Mast to win the 400 relay (57.6). M/BV tops Patriots The Moriah/Boquet Valley girls track and field team scored a 72-49 victory over AuSable Valley in CVAC competition May 10. Julianna Reimersma earned a trio of wins for M/BV in the 100 (12.8), 200 (27.9), and long jump (14-10.5); as did Keira Callahan with wins in the 1,500 (6:30.9), 800 (2:58.7) and 3,000 (15:50.8). Sophia McKiernan scored wins in the 100 hurdles (18.8) and 400 hurdles (1:24.7); while Alexis Baumann doubled in the 400 (1:11.0) and triple jump (27-1.25). The relay team of Baumann, Reimersma, McKiernan, and Sydney Bisselle won the 1,600 relay in 5:28.9). Emma Pelkey won the high jump for the Patriots with a mark of 4-2. In the relay events, Emma Clark, Alexandra Gravatt, Cassidy Richards, and Aila Dame won the 3,200 relay in 15:08.8, and the quartet of Lily Butler, Mya Bushey, Ava Sucharzewski, and Clark won the 400 relay in 1:07.8).
