Baseball: Hornets defeat Panthers

PLATTSBURGH | The Hornet varsity baseball team scored in each of their first five trips to the plate May 2 in a 14-1 win over Crown Point. "Alex O'Neal started the game for us today, it was his first varsity game as a sophomore," said Hornet coach Patrick Shaughnessy. "I couldn't have asked for anything more, I thought he threw well. He gave us three innings with one run and eight strikeouts (four in the third). Very proud of him." "I was a little nervous at first," said O'Neal. "I walked the first batter, settled in and it went good from there. I don't know if I'm staying up, but if I am then I need to get used to hitting pitchers who are throwing this fast and hard." "Alex pitched a fantastic game," said first baseman Ty Calkins. "There are a couple of hard-throwing pitchers coming up and if we get used to that then we have a great shot." On offense, Carter King and Ben Bordeau both had triples, Braeden McGinnis and Michael Phillips both had two RBI and Marcus Griffiths provided a pair of hits. Bostyn Duquette and Jack Ferris closed out the game for Plattsburgh High on the mound. Noah Spaulding and Evan Carey each threw one inning for the Panthers, while Reese Pertak and Ryan Russell each threw two. Sentinels pull away early It was a dup of Nathans providing an early spark for the Ticonderoga baseball team May 2, as Nathan LaCourse had a big first inning hit, followed by a second-inning long ball from Nathan Trudeau in the Sentinels 14-2 win over Lake Placid. "Nathan LaCourse sparked the first-inning rally with a long double and Nate Trudeau hit a three-run home run to score an additional three runs in the second inning," said Sentinel coach Dan Dorsett. "The third inning was a five-run rally for Ti, all with two outs to break the game wide open. We played solid defense and hit throughout the lineup. It was nice to score some runs today." LaCourse and Trudeau each had a pair of hits for the Sentinels, with Trudeau getting five RBI. Owen Stonitsch added a single and doubler, with Garrett Drinkwine connecting on a pair of singles. Connor Yaw earned the win on the mound, throwing 5-2/3 innings and striking out six. PJ Colby started and took the loss for Lake Placid. Patriots hold off Bobcats A seven-run fifth inning for Northern Adirondack answered AuSable Valley's scoring output in the top half of the inning, but it was the Patriots who were able to be more consistent on offense April 30 in a 19-7 victory over the Bobcats. Austin Matilla carried a perfect game into the fourth innings, striking out six and earning the win on the mound. Ted Bruno led the Patriots with a quartet of hits, while Zander McCabe had two singles and a double. Nate Doner added a single and double, while David Butler and Carson Garcia each had two. Zach Bola added a double, Patrick Benware had a pair of hits for the Bobcats, both coming in the fifth inning. Hornets sweep Section X foes The PHS varsity baseball team scored a pair of weekend wins over Section X opponents Salmon River (11-0) and Norwood-Norfolk (20-8). Against Salmon River, Carter King, Brayden Trombley, and Trenton Griffiths each had a pair of hits, while Griffiths went the distance on the mound for the win, striking out nine. "I cannot say enough good things about Trenton today," said coach Patrick Shaughnessy. "He had two hits and two runs scored while also pitching a gem of a game. He kept Salmon River off balance the entire game with his off-speed and location. Ben (Bordeau) called a great game, he and Trenton were in sync the whole game. "Carter King and Marcus Griffiths did a good job from the top of the order for us yet again with four runs scored and six steals combined," added Shaughnessy. "We played a much better game in the afternoon than we did in the morning." The morning saw the Hornets score a 20-8 win over Norwood-Norfolk, as Griffiths went 4-for-4 with a walk and four RBI. Bostyn Duquette had three singles, scoring four times and driving in three, while Jake Calkins had a trio of hits. "Dylan Crowley did a great job on the mound for us. He did everything we asked him to do," said Shaughnessy. "Our defense was not what we had hoped for this game. We like to take pride in our defense and base running but during the early game only one of those things showed up." Chazy walks off against Wild Eagles Chase Clukey knocked a base hit to score Elijah Valentin in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Chazy varsity baseball team a 12-11 walkout win over Bolton/Schroon Lake in MVAC baseball play April 30. "We trailed by four runs going into the bottom of the seventh when Jeremy Juneau cracked a triple to make the score 11-8," said Eagles coach John Tregan. "After a hit by pitch and strikeout with two on and two outs, Dale Goyno, Jr., cracked a three-run home run to right-center field to tie the game. Elijah Valentin followed with an infield single, stole second, and then scored on a Chase Clukey game-winning hit. We trailed for most of the game and had many chances to give up, our kids just kept fighting and found a way to make it happen. They will be a tough out all year and will be right there at the end of the year competing for a sectional title." Clukey started the game for Chazy on the mound, with Valentin relieving in the fifth and winning pitcher Zane Stevens coming on in the sixth. Isaiah Pelkey started for the Wild Eagles, while Sullivan Eager took the loss in relief. Jace Hubert connected on a double for Bolton/Schroon Lake, as did Pelkey, Logan Bush, and Staś Wiktorko. Blue Bombers keep Griffins at bay The Lake Placid varsity baseball team responded to Boquet Valley's five-run fifth inning, scoring eight of their own in the bottom half to go away with a 17-6 victory April 30. PJ Colby earned the in on the mound with eight strikeouts over four innings of work, while also adding a trio of hits at the plate. Jon Caito (double) and Foster Wood also had a trio of hits, while John Ledwith (double) and Sam Hooker (double) each had two. Max Hyman also connected on a double. Jon Howard took the loss for the Griffins, with Justin Joslyn throwing in relief. Jameson Fiegl continued a strong season with a double, while George Staats and Landon Egglefield each got their first varsity hits, both driving in runs. Hornets top Vikings Five runs in each of the first two innings propelled Plattsburgh High to a 17-3 win over Moriah April 29. Colin Golden took the win for the Hornets, who connected on 18 hits in the game, led by Carter King's 4-for-6 day, finishing a double shy of the cycle with a triple and home run. Warren Miller added a three-hit night with three RBI, while Ben Bordeau and Golden each had a pair of hits. Isaac White's RBI single for Moriah was one of four Viking hits. Beekmantown shuts down Sentinel bats Steven Bronson and Andrew VanNatten combined to only allow two hits to the Ticonderoga bats in a 12-1 Beekmantown varsity baseball win April 29. "Steven Bronson pitched well for us tonight with nine strikeouts and Andrew VanNatten came in and closed out the game with four strikeouts in the last two innings," said Eagles coach Dave Manney. "Andrew VaNatten also helped our offense by chipping in with three hits. Anthony Marion had two hits and Quinn Brandell notched our only extra-base hit. This game was a good team win for us and we need to continue to improve and keep the momentum going. Ticonderoga's Nathan Trudeau had two hits for his team." Trudeau took the loss on the mound for the Sentinels, while Connor Yaw pitched in relief. Cougars walk-off against Patriots Lucas Hemingway connected for what proved to be the walk-off hit for Northeastern Clinton in an 8-7 win against AuSable Valley April 29. Hemingway finished with a single, home run, and three RBI in the win. "This was a great game played by both teams," said Cougar coach Jeff Norton. "It was back and forth the whole game with neither team showing any quit. Scott LaMountain was tough on the mound to start the game and had a huge game at the plate for AuSable. We found ourselves down a few runs early again, and once again we were able to overcome adversity. We started the game struggling to knock runs in, but in the later innings, we got a few key hits. "In the bottom of the seventh, Gabe Surprenant got a big two-out single," Norton added. "That was followed up by a single by Lucas Hemingway that ended up knocking in the game-winning run after an outfield error." Jim Wells, Jr., got the win in relief for the Cougars. Scott LaMountain started for the Patriots while going 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. Connor LaDuke relieved on the mound and took the loss. Chazy shuts out Orange Dale Gonyo, Chase Clukey, Novak Jarus, Zane Stevens, and Caden Columbus each hit doubles for the Chazy varsity baseball team in a 17-0 win over Indian Lake/Long Lake April 29. Stevens earned the win for the Eagles, while Dale Gonyo and Reagan Dudyak also saw time on the mound. Garrett Hutchins threw four innings for the Orange while hitting a double at the plate, with Charlotte Liddle throwing the final inning to Marilla Liddle, who caught the full game. Wild Eagles defeat Irish Jags Bolton Schroon Lake scored five runs in each of their first two innings en route to a 12-1 win over Johnsburg-Minerva April 29. "Schroon Lake/Bolton came out swinging the bats very well and were able to jump out to a big lead early," said Irish Jaguars coach Zach Pierson. "We were never able to get the bats going. Schroon Lake/Bolton played excellent defense on the balls we put in play and that makes it difficult to get anything going." Isaiah Pelkey earned the win, with relief work by Corbin Baker, Sullivan Eager, and Stas Witorko. Ethan Dunbar was on the losing end, with Yanden Cleveland also working on the mound. Witorko had a three-run homer for the Wild Eagles, with Tyler Trowbridge hitting a pair of triples and Brayden Bush adding three singles.
