Crown Point Bird Banding Station returns

CROWN POINT | As the Crown Point Banding Association (CPBA) readies for spring 2022, its 47th year, it has released its 2021 report. That report reflects some of 2021's highlights as well as overall trends. Though 2021 was a pandemic year, the birds apparently were ignorant of that fact, as the total number of individuals (496) and species (54) did not vary significantly compared to previous years. One noteworthy visitor was an exciting "first" at Crown Point: a Brewster's warbler. This rare "intergrade," or hybrid, is a species cross between a blue-winged warbler and a golden-winged warbler — both of which have been banded at the station and likely breed in the area as well, according to CPBA Coordinator Ted Hicks. This group not only bands birds; it also collects reams of information which, when combined with data from other banding stations, provides important clues to understanding weather cycles and aberrations. That data also informs conservationists about where to not situate wind turbine farms and where and when to reduce lights on high-rise buildings during nights of denser migration, thus lessening confusion and the death of millions of migrating birds. This year's banding will run from May 7 to May 20, starting at 7 a.m. and wrapping up at 5 p.m. As always, the public is invited to observe. Park in front of the Historic Site Museum and walk to the banding station about 1/3 of a mile on unpaved surfaces. People with accessibility concerns should contact the Historic Site office several days in advance to arrange transportation to the station. The Crown Point State Historic Site (CPSHS) has several nature- and bird-related activities lined up during this time, including a Twilight Bird Hike with Gregg Van Deusen.
