Griffins rally comes up short

PLATTSBURGH | A 16-8 fourth quarter was almost what the Boquet Valley varsity girls basketball team needed to end their Class D regional final against Hartford March 13. Unfortunately, they also needed a little more. Two late Hartford free throws sealed a 57-51 victory for the Tanagers over the Griffins, a game they once led by as many as 17 points. Boquet Valley (18-6) opened the game with an 11-4 lead midway through the opening quarter, but Hartford finished the first half with a 29-7 run, outscoring the Griffins 11-1 in the remainder of the first quarter and 18-6 in the second. The Griffins were unable to make any deep cut into the Hartford lead in the third quarter, despite getting 13 points from Ella Lobdell in the stanza. In the fourth, the Griffins made their run, cutting the lead down to 55-51 with less than a minute to play thanks to a 16-6 run, but were unable to get another basket, fouling late to lead to the Tanagers' final two points. Abbey Schwoebel scored 11 of her team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, adding 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Schwoebel finished her junior campaign with 1,368 career points, tied for 15th on the Section VII girls all-time scoring list with Keene alum Elaina Smith. Lobdell also recorded a double-double, finishing with a total of 18 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Alessia Caputo added five points and seven boards, while Sadie Thompson had four points and eight rebounds; Abby Monty added two points and four rebounds; Alaina Denton one point and Maddie Kirkby one assist.
