Sectional loss ends Warriors' season

SARATOGA SPRINGS | Winning 11 games in a row recently, the Lake George boys basketball team appeared to be on their way to winning their fourth consecutive Sectional championship in boys basketball. On Feb. 26, however, their reign was cut short in the Section II Class CC quarterfinals, as Greenwich upset the Warriors 72-51 with a concerted effort — on both offense and defense — from all of the athletes on the Witches' deep roster. "It was a rough day for us," Lake George coach Blake White said following the game. "They played a 'Triangle and Two' on us against our two leading players, and we just couldn't deal with it," he said following the game. "We just weren't able to run our offense against their pressure." Early in the game, the Warriors were down 15 points, but by the end of the second quarter, Lake George cut that deficit to eight points. But in the third quarter, the Warriors were again stymied by Greenwich as they were outscored 18-8. Then in the final stanza, the Witches added three more points to their lead. "Greenwich has a good group of players," White said. "We had very good scrimmages and practices this week — and our kids had been working hard — but we just had a tough time today." Over the game, Ryan Becker led the Warriors with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He was followed by Julius Moffitt with 12 points, Cameron Orr with seven points, Isaac Herrick with two three-pointers, and Luke Sheldon and Dan Barber with four points each. White offered his thoughts on the 2021-22 season. "Our high points included winning the Adirondack League Division and getting a No. 1 seed for the League playoffs," he said. Also, after struggling in late December against Glens Falls and Granville, the Warriors won in overtime against Galway, which may have prompted the 11 consecutive victories which followed. "We seemed to get into a good rhythm in offense," he said. "We were on a high note, but we kind of finished the season on a sour note — but that's the way it goes some times." Lake George graduates eight seniors this year, including five guards who were key to the team's accomplishments: Orr, Becker, Moffitt, Herrick and Kyle Dolan. Although four of these five were starters, White expressed optimism about next year's prospects. "Our team will have a different look next year, but we are excited about our juniors who are returning and the guys who are coming up from junior varsity," he said. "We have a very good foundation for next year."
