A new Wind-Chill Factory location to open in early spring

TICONDEROGA | Capital-region residents Brandon Whalen, and his wife Keely Whalen, will open a new Wind-Chill Factory in Ballston Spa. Brandon is the son of Bobby Porter, owner of the popular Wind-Chill Factory located on Route 9N in Ticonderoga. Porter is a science teacher at Ticonderoga Middle School. The couple plan to open their new eatery, located at 3 Triebel Ave. in Ballston Spa, by the beginning of April. "We'll have mostly the same menu (offered in Ticonderoga) but we're a little smaller in size," Brandon said. "We have burgers, fries, hot dogs, Philly's, and lots more. We are also offering hard ice cream which is something Ti doesn't do. We will have the popular fish fry, too." "We'll also have an 18-hole miniature golf course with new greens, too, so that's different," Keely added. "We're also going to host a classic car show every Wednesday with trophies for the winners," Brandon noted. "We love classic cars but visitors can also bring newer cars like, say, a Corvette (or other modern muscle cars). Everyone who enters a car will get a free Wind-Chill ice cream." Brandon continues to work as an instructor at the U.S. Navy's Kesselring site in Ballston Spa; he also served as a submariner aboard the USS Minnesota. Now he is following in his father's footsteps. He started out more than two decades ago when, as a four-year-old, he developed an interest in the family business. He started out serving ice cream with his father in the establishment's original "little white building," then started cooking, and was even the business' first delivery person. He learned the business from the bottom up. "This is literally what Brandon grew up doing," Keely said. "He always wanted to open up another Wind-Chill. We've been together since attending Ticonderoga High School. And my parents owned Frenchie's Restaurant in Crown Point but it never became quite as big as the Wind-Chill Factory. So, I grew up in a similar environment. It's amazing that it's all coming together so many years later. It's all coming full circle." The original Wind-Chill Factory opened in 1996 and has been among the Lake George region's favorite local spots for food and ice cream. Brandon and Keely Whalen will maintain the Wind-Chill's high-quality along with fresh ingredients on their Ballston Spa-locale's made-to-order menu.
