Warrensburg girls extend winning streak to six games

WARRENSBURG | The Warrensburg Girls Basketball team won three games in a row this week to extend their streak of consecutive victories to six. Against Stillwater on Jan. 24, the Burghers overcame a slow start and an injury to junior guard Kailey Bacon two minutes into the game to earn a hard-fought 42-36 win. Scoring was led by senior forward Olivia Frazier's 18 points and sophomore forward Hope Sherman's 12 points in this non-league game. On Jan. 27, the Burghers played what coach Scott Smith described as one of the team's "most complete games" of the season as they defeated Argyle 52-18 in a league matchup. Junior guard Kara Bacon and junior forward Karla Sherman executed rigorous defense, limiting Argyle's top two scorers to a combined eight points, less than one-quarter their average combined scoring. All eight eligible Burgher players scored, led by Hope Sherman's 17 points, Karla Sherman's career-high 14 points, and Frazier's seven points. The following day, the Burghers traveled to Salem for their next Adirondack League game. Salem got off to a very strong start and the Warrensburg was trailing 21-10 midway through the second quarter. However, the Burghers rallied, reducing the gap to a 24-20 deficit at halftime. In the second half, the Burghers fought full-throttle and executed a strong comeback, outscoring the Generals 31-11. Their tenacious defense held Salem to merely one field goal over the entire second half. Frazier had 15 points and Hope Sherman had 13 points to lead the team against Salem, although all eight Warrensburg players scored. Smith said sophomore guard Bridget Anaman provided "a huge contribution" off the bench, not only with her eight points, but her energy on defense. Kara Bacon also scored eight points in this game which Warrensburg won 51-35. As of Jan. 30, the Burghers were 9-2 in the league and 11-4 overall while heading into the regular season's conclusion. On Sunday, they were anticipating playing their annual Senior Game at home against Stillwater for a rematch of the Burghers' 42-36 victory on Jan. 24. Two league games follow for the Burghers: a meetup with Whitehall Feb. 2 in an away game and then against Hartford at home on Friday, Feb. 4.
