Recap: Viking boys win pair to open week

ELLENBURG | Opening the week with back-to-back games, the top-ranked Moriah boys varsity basketball team scored a pair of wins, putting one game away late and the second early. Against Saranac Jan. 24, the Vikings used a 23-11 fourth quarter to score a 62-39 win, while using a 36-4 opening quarter en route to a 74-38 win over Northern Adirondack Jan. 25. Bryce Sprague scored 18 of his game-high 31 points in the second half against Saranac while adding nine rebounds. Rowan Swan added 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals, while Will Rohrer combined four points with 13 boards. Joe Pelkey scored seven Vikings points, as Brady Olcott scored four, Evan Fleury two, Kaydin Sargent two, Cooper Allen one, and Sam Langey one. Matt Faville led the Chiefs with 13 points, while Lucas Pierce added 10, Sebastian Pellerin four, Keagan Brown four, Kyler White four, Justin Bedard two, and Keegan Pecor two. The following day, Swan and Sprague combined for 29 of the Vikings' 36 first-quarter points against the Bobcats, with the squad scoring 38 more points over the final three quarters. Playing limited time the rest of the game, Sprague finished with 18 points, while Swan ended on 15. Rohrer scored 10 points for Moriah, with Kendrick Peters scoring six, Pelkey six, Feury four, Riley Demarais four, Sam Scoresome four, Allen three, Olcott two, and Kade Gilbo two. Matt and Brady Boulrice each scored 12 points to lead the Bobcats, with Patrick Benware adding 10, Calvin Magoon two, and Harold Carter two. Despite the loss, Bobcats coach Nate Bilow said the team was appreciative of the home crowd in Ellenburg. "You wouldn't have known the score from the atmosphere in the gym tonight. Our fans supported the boys throughout the game, and it was a pleasure to be a part of." Panthers rout Orange The Crown Point varsity boys basketball team jumped out to a 50-4 lead against Indian Lake/Long Lake after two periods of play Jan. 25, eventually scoring a 92-12 win where 10 Panthers found their way onto the scoresheet. "We were very well prepared tonight and we played with a lot of energy," said Panthers coach Jason Hughes. "We got off to a very fast start, turning them over and getting some easy baskets early in the game. We got great productivity from our first six guys then we were able to get our reserves a lot of minutes. Those guys have worked hard in practice and it is nice to have the opportunity to get them in the game. They did a great job, most of them scored and were very effective defensively. I know that Indian Lake-Long Lake is not 100-percent — they have some sickness and injuries — but I am glad that we were able to get the game in. They worked hard despite the lopsided score, We have a lot of respect for their effort." Trevor Harris combined a game-high 25 points with nine rebounds, while Anthony Greenan added 19 points, seven assists and seven steals. Noah Spaulding had a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists, while Reese Pertak added 10 points, Cameron Waldorf six, Alex Stone six, Austyn Taylor six, Tommy Dorsett three, Bruce Kwandrans two, and Matt Beeman one. Garret Hutchins and Deuce Hosley scored four points each for the Orange, with Gabe Stanton and Hall scored two points each. Massena tops Nighthawks Nicholas Petro scored six points to lead the Peru varsity boys basketball team in scoring in a 65-21 loss against Massena. Lucas Allen and Matt Corral each scored five points for the Nighthawks, with Wyatt Premore adding four and Connor Sweeney one.
