Proof of vaccination soon required for cross-border truck drivers

PLATTSBURGH | The North Country Chamber of Commerce is reminding area businesses that engage in cross-border commercial shipping that U.S. truck drivers will need to start showing proof of vaccination at the border starting Jan. 15. Starting Saturday, Canada will require all truck and commercial drivers- who were previously exempt from the mandate- to show proof of full vaccination and also to use the Arrive Can app to pre-report their intended crossings. As a rich transportation hub, North Country drivers often haul essentials such as heating fuel and building supplies across the border between New York and Quebec and officials said all companies will need to be in compliance to continue that strong supply chain and network. Business advocates fear the new guidelines will bring commerce delays and disruptions and have rallied international opposition to the new requirements. The Canadian Trucking Alliance expects the mandate will take 10-20 percent of truck drivers off the road and cause greater supply chain disruptions. On Jan. 13, North Country Chamber officials said "We continue to advocate that both the U.S. and Canada set aside these new requirements on truck drivers, who have been exempt since March 2020 as essential workers with no significant problems." "Businesses who begin to experience shipping problems as a result are invited to share that information with us." The U.S. will similarly require vaccination of cross-border truckers starting Jan. 22.
