Historical Champy marker to be replaced

PLATTSBURGH | Following public outcry and a disheartening theft, the Town of Plattsburgh, William G. Pomeroy Foundation and Clinton County Historical Association are now working to bring the iconic folklore sign back to the scenic shores of Lake Champlain. In mid-November, Cumberland Head residents and Plattsburgh officials were dismayed to find the Champy marker stolen from its base along the Cumberland Head straights. Despite a police investigation and public plea for information, the sign was never recovered. In mid-January, Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman said the unfortunate theft has now united the town and local organizations to bring back the Legends and Lore historical marker. The Pomeroy Foundation, which originally granted the marker, has offered to cover 50 percent of the cost of replacement if the town can come up with the remaining 50 percent. After the outpouring of community support for this historical marker, officials have decided to hold a t-shirt fundraiser to raise the remaining 50 percent. The Clinton County Historical Association is now hosting the fundraiser to make the match possible. The $25 gray T-shirts will be standard sizes with images of Champy holding the historical marker in his mouth on the front and with the full text of the marker on the back in green. Only 50 t-shirts to be sold. Orders can be placed at the Town of Plattsburgh offices at 151 Banker Rd. in the Planning Department. Those interested can call 518-562-6850 to request an order form. All payments must be made in full at the time of order placement in the form of exact cash or check made out to the Clinton County Historical Association with "Champy" on the memo line and order form. Deadline for the pre-orders is Feb. 8 unless the shirts sell out before. "I am incredibly grateful to the Pomeroy Foundation for affording us this opportunity to replace such a beloved community landmark. We are also very appreciative of the Clinton County Historical Association's commitment to assisting us in achieving the 50 percent replacement funds. Champy is an important historical symbol to our town and region, and we want to continue to recognize this local lore," Cashman said.
