DEC's seedling sale ready for orders

ALBANY | New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (NYSDEC) annual Spring Seedling Sale is now taking orders. The sale runs until May 13. Each year, low-cost, New York-grown tree and shrub species are grown by the Saratoga Tree Nursery to encourage conservation plantings and foster the next generation of forests. The Saratoga Tree Nursery grows its own stock on-site from local seed sources, thereby ensuring plants are well-suited for New York State USDA growing zones and conditions. More than 50 conifer and hardwood species are available in bundles of 25 or more, as are variety packs containing a mixture of species. Some species tend to sell out early, so placing your order early is recommended to ensure availability. Free Seedlings Available for Youth Education through School Seedling Program From now until March 31, schools and youth education organizations across New York State can receive up to 50 free tree or shrub seedlings to plant with their students, with an eye on encouraging environmental stewardship at an early age. All schools—including public, private, homeschool groups, and youth education-based organizations—can apply, provided trees are planted within New York State. Seedlings are two to three years old, about four to 12 inches tall, and come bare-root. Three packets are available: 50 white spruce, 50 white pine, or 30 mixed shrub species appropriate for wildlife habitat. Each school or organization can receive one packet per year.
