Longtime Veteran Services director honored in Hall of Fame

PLATTSBURGH | After nearly two decades of service with the United States Air Force, Steven Bowman's military career then shifted to a lifetime legacy of advocacy that continues today. Bowman enlisted in the Air Force in 1976, earning numerous commendations, including the Meritorious Service award, before he retired in the mid 90s. He was soon elected Post Commander for the American Legion-a 10-year term he served with honor as he was also elected County Commander, District Commander and Department Vice Commander. In 2006, he was named Legionnaire of the Year. In 2004, Bowman was appointed director of the Clinton County Veterans Service Agency, where he's spent the time since advocating for local veterans and their families, becoming a well-known figure of support for veterans and agencies across the North Country, state and beyond. Named American Legion Service Officer in 2014, Bowman has also served as District Rehab Chairman, County Judge Advocate and Post Service Oﬃcer. He also served as the County and District Oratorical Chairman, working with students on Constitutional speech contests, as the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post Judge Advocate and Children and Youth Chair, where he worked with students in the Voice of Democracy and Patriot Pen programs. Through the years, Bowman also worked with the City of Plattsburgh and Disabled American Veterans Chapter to establish the highly regarded Plattsburgh Barracks Veterans Park and Memorial, where veterans gather each year for solidarity and somber remembrances and honor ceremonies. In one of his most recent causes to help honor veterans across the state, Bowman worked tirelessly with the New York State Legislature to enact laws to establish the first New York State Veterans Cemetery, which was officially designated in July 2021. With a legacy of service that spans a lifetime, Bowman was recently selected as a 2021 Veterans Hall of Fame inductee by Sen. Dan Stec, who commended him again in person at a recognition ceremony Dec. 8. After being formally inducted into the Hall of Fame in November, Bowman gathered alongside Sen. Dan Stec at the Clinton County Legislature meeting Wednesday evening when he was again commended for his years of service and continued dedication to veterans affairs and support. "Steve is the kind of individual you want fighting for our veterans and his years of advocacy earned him the appreciation of so many veterans and their families," Sen. Stec said following the ceremony as he detailed Bowman's lifelong contributions to the nation and local veterans community.
