Clinton Correctional on lockdown following massive inmate brawl

DANNEMORA | A series of violent incidents among incarcerated individuals at Clinton Correctional Facility prompted a facility-wide lockdown and swift response by Emergency Response Teams Dec. 8. After several multi-person altercations broke out Wednesday morning, Department of Corrections and Community Supervision emergency response teams were activated to help restore order. The violence came just days after a massive brawl erupted among roughly two dozen inmates at the facility on Sunday. Officials said the lockdown was authorized to deescalate tension among the incarcerated population and to allow for a full search of the facility for contraband as the investigations continues. The lockdown measure will keep inmates in place as the facility and cells are searched and housing units are investigated per DOCCS protocol. No serious injuries were initially believed to have been reported. The latest incident comes in a series of violent attacks at the maximum-security prison in recent months, leaving both officers and incarcerated individuals seriously injured in a number of separate attacks. A recent DOCCS memo to incarcerated individuals sought to discourage the outbreaks as officials pledged to seek immediate and full prosecution of any inmate who participates in officer assaults and further prison violence. Clinton Correctional is expected to remain on lockdown for several days. As the incidents remained under investigation Wednesday evening, NYSCOPBA Northern Region Vice President John Roberts said "Sadly, violence within our correctional facilities is nothing new and this is just the latest example of the existing threat our members face each day they go to work." "The numbers simply speak for themselves, as despite the prison population at its lowest point in nearly four decades, violent attacks continue to set new records year after year. Given the recent admission by the Department of these unprovoked attacks, we need the State to act now to protect staff before another officer suffers from this unrelenting violence."
