Renovated 1932 Jack Shea Arena reopens

LAKE PLACID | Part of an extensive slate of renovations and remodeling at Olympic facilities here, work on the historic 1932 Jack Shea Arena is complete. The facility has been reopened for ice hockey tournaments and to the public. Officials at the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) announced the completion of the nine-month modernization project. "The 1932 Jack Shea Arena was home to the first indoor skating events in Olympic history," ORDA CEO and President Mike Pratt said in a news release. "We are excited to reopen this iconic rink with its new improvements and to continue building upon its remarkable heritage." The 1932 rink is networked into the Olympic Center's new refrigeration plant, which is more efficient and designed to make ice faster and more reliable. "The new rink includes sound-absorbing panels for better acoustics throughout the arena, a new de-humidification system, a new concession area, and new dasher boards. The rink can now be converted to either international or National Hockey League size standards. "All seats have been replaced in an attractive deep blue color, and new seating areas have been added to the balcony side of the stadium," ORDA said. The ice sheet is maintained with an electric Zamboni. "The reopening of the 1932 Arena is a major step in our complete revitalization of the Olympic Center," according to Olympic Center General Manager Terry Buczkowski. "We look forward to showcasing this incredible improvement to our communities, our guests and the world." Going forward, ORDA is looking to make ice time available year-round with plans to expand skating programs, increase the number of hockey tournaments, and coordinate with the community, athletes, and local youth organizations to continue developing ice sport. Ongoing Olympic Center projects include major upgrades in the 1980 Rink and to the James B. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval. All guest areas of the facility are in the process of being renovated. The new 1932 Jack Shea Arena will host short-track speed skating during the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid.
