WARRENSBURG | When it comes to indulging la dolce vita, the good life, Sulla Terra Bistro and Bakery, located at 3749 Main St. in downtown Warrensburg, is all about pampering your sweet tooth and satisfying those breakfast, lunch, and (occasional) dinner desires. Owner April Fiorentino is one woman business pioneer in a small community who didn't let the COVID pandemic economy derail her goal of providing local residents with fantastic food and baked goods. And thanks to a number of generations-old Fiorentino family recipes, customers can savor the best of local Italian cuisine along with all-American standard fare. Fiorentino opened the bistro in July 2020. She had planned to open the bistro April 1, as a lighthearted nod to her first name, but the pandemic eruption and delays with state permitting pushed off a springtime premiere. "Last year was not the greatest time to open a business," she told The Sun. "COVID hit and I was waiting for my health permit. There was a snafu, the permit was waiting but no one informed me, so then I eventually opened July 7. My initial goal was to be just a bakery... but I ended up supplementing that with breakfast and lunch, and once in a while I will do dinners, on Monday nights, with pasta, prime rib, etc. I announce those dinners on the bistro's Facebook page, so I know how much to prepare. I am a one-woman show right now. The establishment is small but it's very comfortable with seating for around 20; it's a nice, intimate setting." Sulla Terra fits in the category of a full-service American Bistro serving a variety of delicious classics. "Whether you're in the mood for fluffy, stuffed french toast, a delicious sandwich made to order, or a handcrafted sweet treat with a signature latte, the extensive menu has it all. And don't forget the kiddos; we have lots of great options for them, too," Fiorentino added. Owner Fiorentino is now in her second busy holiday season, especially with baked goods in the oven. For Thanksgiving just past, she knocked out 49 scrumptious pies (all in just 48 hours) along with Sulla Terra's phenomenal Amazing Grazing meal boxes. So, where else can you name the pie and the baker will make it for you? Everything she cooks up is made from scratch with fresh ingredients. And Fiorentino laughs whenever someone comments that she's always cracking eggs. "My baked goods have really taken off and as far as breakfast goes, my eggs benedict and stuffed French toast seem to be the big hits," she said. "Many restaurants have their own take on breakfast, but we're confident that ours is the best," Fiorentino said. "From new tastes to the old classics... Day or night, early or late; we've got something for the whole family." And that's probably why Sulla Terra is considered by many local folks to be the top American bistro in the Warrensburg area. Sulla Terra's clientele span all ages and profiles. Everyone is welcome. For example, a recent visit to Sulla Terra included State Sen. Dan Stec who rubbed elbows with local BOCES students, Hudson Headwaters' health workers, and a few others, among others. Now that's proof-positive that there's something for everybody at Sulla Terra. If you require a custom lunch, or desire something special for an occasional, ask and you shall most likely receive, according to Fiorentino. We wondered, maybe, if the Italian term Sulla Terra might be a nod to the famous, ancient Roman statesman and warrior Gen. Lucius Sulla? "No," Fiorentino said. "Originally, I wanted to name the business 'Down to Earth Apothecary Cafe', but then I asked my husband how 'down to earth' translated into Italian. 'It's sulla terra,' he said, and that's much easier."
