Elizabethtown 2022 tax levy down 9.5 percent

ELIZABETHTOWN | The tax levy in Elizabethtown is down almost 9.5 percent in the final 2022 Town Budget. The tax levy - the amount to be raised by taxes - is $1,074,914, down 9.47 percent from current year spending, according to Supervisor Noel Merrihew III. The levy decrease means property owners could see a $60 drop-in taxes on a home valued at $100,000, Merrihew said. The total 2022 budget for Elizabethtown is set at $1,965,652 and was adopted by the town council on Nov. 16. They achieved the reduction by applying fund balance against the levy. "We had reduced our spending throughout the covid-19 pandemic, so we did have a more formidable fund balance, which the board directed me to apply to the levy," Merrihew said, commending the board's work on the 2022 spending plan. The budget summary shows $99,996 applied from the unexpended balance toward the general fund along with $139,743 applied from the unexpended balance toward the highway fund. There are no major purchases planned for next year, Merrihew said. But the town did increase its pay rate to $15 per hour in order to be competitive in the current job market. The town is hiring CDL drivers. The 2022 budget also includes $5,000 in additional cemetery maintenance funds, a portion of which will be used to help cover costs of repairs at the Boquet Cemetery, which was vandalized last summer. Fundraising for the repairs drew immense local and regional support through the Boquet Valley American Legion Post, which raised $5,000 in donations toward the project.
