Horicon councilman to step into town CEO role

HORICON | Horicon Town Board member Michael Geraci, who has extensive experience in law enforcement and public safety, will be taking on the role of the Horicon town supervisor Jan. 1. Geraci has substantial roots in the community, as he serves on the North Warren Emergency Medical Services Board of Directors, and was Horicon town justice between late 2019 through March 2021, and was appointed to the Horicon town board several months later. In a recent interview, Geraci said Horicon has made a lot of progress over the last decade, particularly in pursuing shared services with other towns, saving taxpayers money. For instance, the town shares its bookkeeper, assessor and zoning administrator with surrounding towns. "We now have a very good model of governing in the town of Horicon, including a small but effective staff who care about our community," he said. "I'm proud of what we have in place and hope to carry it on the best I can." Geraci said one of his top priorities is to preserve environmental quality, particularly concerning the town's waterways. "We have two beautiful lakes — Brant Lake and Schoon Lake, and I want to protect them as much as possible," he said, adding that they both are important natural and recreational assets. In recent years, Horicon's hamlet of Brant Lake has experienced a social revival, with the introduction of Food Truck Fridays and the cafe/bicycle shop The Hub and its off-road bike trails becoming a regional attraction. Geraci said he'd like to see this trend continue, and that he supports the extension of the summer tenure of Food Truck Fridays by a few weeks. He said he would also be interested in starting new community events. Geraci has an extensive background in public safety and in governmental administration. He has been held positions of the Regional Administrator and Director Safety Programs for the federal National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Also, he has been employed as the Executive Director of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police. Additionally, he served as Chief of Police for the City of Schenectady, as well as Deputy Chief of Police and Director of Emergency Management for the town of Colonie. Geraci said he'd like to enhance the local government's two-way communication with the public, particularly during incidents that involve public safety, including road closures and severe weather events. "Personal accessibility, transparency of information and exceptional responsiveness will all be essential elements of my administration," he said.
