City votes on annexation

PLATTSBURGH | On April 12, the City of Plattsburgh and Town of Plattsburgh held a press conference to announce the collaboration between the two municipalities which resulted in the creation of the Plattsburgh Compact. The collaboration was established as an effort to end ongoing litigation between the municipalities. "The city and the town have come to an agreement. It's a global settlement to address a number of the issues that have plagued our communities over the last several years," City of Plattsburgh Mayor Chris Rosenquest said at the time. On Oct. 21, a joint municipal public hearing regarding the annexation of 15/27 Lemay Drive was held as part of the annexation process. "Today we are here at a public hearing of something that is an annexation but really it's a boundary line adjustment that is mutually beneficial, codified in the spirit of the Plattsburgh Compact," Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman said. During the hearing, South Plattsburgh Fire District Commissioner Chair Wallace Day addressed the board and council with concerns regarding the annexation. In two letters, one addressed to Cashman and the other to Rosenquest, Day read, "We are bound by a process of alteration of boundaries of the fire district section 172a of the laws of New York State. We are also a district which is bonded and therefore we must confirm that the bonding companies in the process and values of the properties do not jeopardize our bonding and reports that we must file annually." During the regularly scheduled meeting of the Common Council held after the public hearings of Local Law P-6 and Local Law P-7, both regarding annexations of parcels of property, the council voted in favor of both local laws. This was the last step required to make the annexation of Reeves Lane and Sharron Avenue official.
