NSL D-I boys: Nighthawk seniors shine on their night; Cougars, Eagles win

PERU | It was senior night for the Peru varsity boys soccer team Oct. 5, and they made an impact in the Nighthawks' 3-0 win against Plattsburgh High in Northern Soccer League Division I play. Senior Dillon Haudberg scored off an Ashton Guay assist to open the scoring in the 35th minute of play for what proved to be the game-winning goal, while insurance goals were scored by Morgan McCormick on an Aiden Pearl assist in the 46th minute; while Nolan Manchester scored on a Sergio Vega assist in the 57th minute. "We practiced the throw into the box and a flick on, and I saw the ball come at me, my adrenaline spiked and I missed the first one, but trapped it with my left foot and was able to finish," said Haudberg of his goal on senior night. "This was my second varsity goal and I thought about it all day — could I put one in on senior night. I played a little more offensively than I usually do and it worked out. This is one of my favorite moments as a varsity player." Senior Ethan Blaise also had a strong game on the defensive side of the ball, as Peru limited the Hornets to six shots on net, with goalie Ryan Robinson covering each ball to preserve the shutout. "Big is an understatement for what we were able to do," said Blaise on the shutout. "I could not be prouder of the boys. To hold Plattsburgh scoreless is a big deal. This was not a one-goal game and park the bus, we played great soccer the entire time and I am very proud of the entire line." Dalton Tahy made eight saves for the Hornets. Cougars shutout Chiefs Northeastern Clinton got a pair of second-half goals to score a 2-0 win over Saranac Oct. 5. Reid LaValley had a hand in both Cougar goals, scoring the game-winner in the 50th minute of play before assisting on an insurance marker by Marcus Bedard in the 58th. Chase Letourneau made four saves in the shutout win. Branden Ashley made six saves for Saranac. Eagles top Storm The Beekmantown varsity boys soccer team responded after Saranac Lake took a 1-0 lead in their Oct. 5 NSL Division I matchup, with Zachary DuBray scoring the next four goals in a 4-1 victory. Dubray scored his first unassisted, while Riley Hewson, Markel Mosley, and Ethan Burke had assists on the next three. Rocco Golden made two saves to earn the win in net. Bailey Bartholomew scored on an Owen Maiore assist for the Red Storm, while Levi Groves made 11 saves.
