New Treadwell Mills trail offers scenic views and historic connections

PLATTSBURGH | A new connector trail-the first to the 27-mile Saranac River Greenway outside the City of Plattsburgh-will now bring local outdoor enthusiasts scenic views along the southern banks of the Saranac River. The Treadwell Mills Connector Trail was officially unveiled Sept. 30 as local lawmakers and supporters came together for an official unveiling of the 1.5-mile scenic pathway off Route 22 South. Touring the trail alongside Schuyler Falls Town Supervisor Kevin Randall, City of Plattsburgh Mayor Chris Rosenquest and Clinton County Legislator Wendell Hughes, Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael S. Cashman applauded the collaborative municipal efforts that made it a reality. "The power of partnership with the Saranac River Trail Greenway and the adjoining municipalities is another example of great things happening in our region," Cashman said after the unveiling as he thanked town Planning and Community Development staff for their work on the project. Described as a "hidden gem right outside the City of Plattsburgh that connects people to the river, forestlands and a beautiful vista of the mountains," the new trail represents the first connection to the growing river greenway and brings hikers along two dams and an area of rich local history. The Greenway begins on the shores of Lake Champlain at Peace Point in the City of Plattsburgh and will eventually lead to the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Saranac. Saranac River Trail Greenway Board of Directors applauded Clinton County Tobacco grant funding and support from the Town of Plattsburgh that allowed for construction of the new gravel trail that intercepts the Central River Power hydroelectric facility's service road and ends in Treadwell Mills at the Lower Saranac Hydroelectric Facility. When completed, the Greenway will bring a combination of shared-use paths, low-volume roadways, natural surface trails, wetland boardwalks and other connections, linking communities along the river from Plattsburgh through Schuyler Falls, Treadwell Mills, Morrisonville, Cadyville, Woods Mills, Saranac and Redford. Phil Von Bargen, president of the Saranac River Trail Greenway board, said "when completed, the Greenway will offer our community and visitors all sorts of opportunities for hiking and biking, as well as cross country skiing and snowshoeing". The Treadwell Mills Connector Trail entrance and parking area can be found about half a mile from Plattsburgh International Airport near the Pike's Cantonment Historical Marker.
