Keeseville Elementary now remote as new cases reported

PLATTSBURGH | As Clinton County saw 115 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, one more local school has switched to temporary remote learning due to the virus' impacts on area classrooms. On Sept. 27, as Saranac Elementary School returned to campus following a week-long switch to remote instruction there, Keeseville Elementary began its first day on a temporary remote basis due to an increase of cases at that school. Keeseville families were notified Sunday that in-person learning and after-school programs would be paused through Tuesday, Oct. 5 "due to the number of positive cases and the large number of students being placed in the required 10-day quarantine over the past week and weekend." "We potentially will have 180 of our students in quarantine over this time," Keeseville Elementary Principal Mike Francia told parents in announcing the pause. "With this large of a number, it is important to keep in mind everyone's health and safety. We have continued to consult with our local health departments and Superintendent Paul Savage to reach this decision." As of Monday, Sept. 27, classes were set to resume in-person at Keeseville Elementary Wednesday, Oct. 6. In its Monday update, the Clinton County Health Department recorded 272 total active cases including the 115 new cases reported since Friday. Roughly 574 Clinton County residents were in quarantine at that time. Essex County Health Department's latest numbers from the weekend were not yet available as of midday Sept. 27, but the county's previous caseload stood at 71 active cases as of Sept. 23 when officials reported 25 percent of the newest ones being attributed to young school-age children.
