McCasland helps lead Eagles to season opening win

BEEKMANTOWN | With 2020's leading scorer Danielle Dyke now in Oswego, Eagles' freshman Grace McCasland showed she was up to the task and ready to take over the mantle in the season opener Aug. 20. McCasland netted a hat trick and assisted on the fourth goal of the game for Beekmantown in a 4-2 win over Northeastern Clinton in the season opener, scoring on assists from Luci Brown, Faith Whitney and Kiera Regan before assisting on Regan's first goal of the season. "I feel this was a great game for the team to build confidence in and start to look forward to the rest of the season," said McCasland. "I just wanted to focus on running through the ball and always being there so you can put the ball in the net." "We were all passing and finding the open gaps against a pretty tough opponent in NCCS," said Beekmantown defender Bailey Mesec, who played in her varsity debut. "Grace had a great game as our top scorer. For our first time playing with three in the back, we were able to support well and keep with their forwards." McCasland scored the first goal of the 2021 high school season in the 19th minute of play, following in a deflection off an NCCS defender and putting it past keeper Desiree DuBois. She connected again in the 33rd minute, finishing her hat trick with a second-and third-effort goal in the 51st. Regan then scored in the 74th minute, while Eagle goalkeeper Macayla Schofield made six saves. Ellie Prairie found the back of the net twice for the Cougars, scoring in the 36th minute on a Bailey LaFountain assists and capping scoring in the 74th — 27 seconds after Regan — on a Gwen Richards assist. DuBois made seven saves for the Cougars.
