Eighth Warren Co. resident dies of COVID-19 since July 1

QUEENSBURY | Warren County officials reported Aug. 27 that another county resident who had not been vaccinated against COVID-19 died of the highly contagious virus. The person, who was in their 70s and had a history of health issues, died in an area hospital and was living at home before contracting the virus. This individual was the eighth to die of COVID-19 since July 1. The death prompted county Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Rachel Seeber to express condolences while urging people to get vaccinated as soon as possible. "We are saddened to report the loss of another community member to the COVID-19 pandemic — a sobering reminder that we should continue to take precautions to avoid spreading COVID to our most vulnerable residents," she said. "We ask that those who have not been vaccinated do so — As we prepare for our schools to open this fall, it is important to have as many people protected as possible." The recent leveling-off of new cases appeared to continue this week, as there were 106 new cases emerging among county residents — along with 97 recoveries — over the week ending Aug. 28, compared to 110 new cases the prior seven days. As of Aug. 28, county Health Services was monitoring 154 active COVID cases, 140 of them involving mild illness — compared with 146 cases a week earlier. Nine of the infected individuals were hospitalized, three more than the prior week. All of the individuals are in moderate condition, county officials said. COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Capital Region continued to increase as of Aug. 28, with the number of patients rising from 114 to 132 over the prior seven days. Health officials said most of these newly emerging cases involved community-based transmission of the contagious virus. Two of the infected individuals had been quarantined for previous COVID exposures. County Health Services Director Ginelle Jones said the new cases this week were due to workplace exposures, gatherings of family and friends, as well as out-of-state travel. She added that a significant number of the cases were among children under the age of 12. Thirty-five of the 106 new cases involved people that had been fully vaccinated. As of Aug. 28, 190 of the 41,938 fully-vaccinated county residents have tested positive for COVID-19 — 175 of them reported mild illness, while five were moderately ill, two were seriously ill and four elderly residents became critically ill and died. The number of Warren County residents quarantined continued at a high level — as of Aug. 28, 267 were in mandatory self-isolation due to suspected COVID-19 exposure, 16 more than a week earlier. The encouraging news, however, is that during the week ending Aug. 28, a total of 283 more county residents became fully vaccinated. Based on the scientific studies concluding that COVID-19 vaccines prevent an overwhelming percentage of hospitalizations and deaths due to the virus, county Health Services continues to recommend that all people get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible. They also urge that all people in the county to wear masks and socially distance in public places where the vaccination status of all other people nearby is unknown — as studies have shown that masks have been effective at preventing infections.
