Town of Plattsburgh seeks DRI Round 5 funds

PLATTSBURGH | The Town of Plattsburgh Town Board recently passed a resolution authorizing the Planning and Community Development Department to move forward with a Round 5 Downtown Revitalization Initiative application to help further its continuing efforts for strategic growth. The town has invested more than $500,000 in planning and more than $24 million dollars in capital improvements over the last decade, knowing that transformational change was coming, officials said in announcing the Aug. 19 approval for the next stage of DRI funding being sought. Through careful and diligent planning initiatives, officials said, the Town of Plattsburgh has prepared itself to implement funding opportunities that become available with the DRI being one such opportunity. "When the Round 5 DRI application was released, it felt like the obvious next step for us. We have invested in our Town Center infrastructure, we have invested in our Town Center planning, and we believe now is the time to invest in the implementation of those plans. The demand is already here for missing middle housing and complete streets upgrades, and the town has a proven track record of getting things done," Town Supervisor Michael Cashman said. He said the town's vision and goals for a thriving Town Center closely align with the goals, purpose and intent of the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative Round 5 by creating a strong sense of place, attracting new business, enhancing public spaces, diverse housing options, public amenities and a reduction in energy consumption. The Town Center Smart Growth Plan and Route 3 Corridor Plan readily identifies multiple projects that would serve this purpose and officials said both plans have already received widespread community support in the past helping to also bring the town's recently adopted Town Center Smart Growth zoning code. A public meeting about the DRI Round 5 will be held Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. at the Town Hall.
