Key time to promote region's green-transportation industry

PLATTSBURGH | As President Joe Biden announced a new target for zero-emission passenger vehicles and many municipalities move toward greener public transportation, Sen. Timothy Kennedy recently made a trip north to visit the region's quickly growing transportation industry. The North Country Chamber of Commerce hosted Sen. Kennedy's visit Aug. 6 when the chair of the New York State Transportation Committee toured Alstom, Nova Bus and Norsk Titanium to learn firsthand about the area's transportation equipment cluster. As the nation starts moving toward greener transportation, Nova Bus has already netted several significant contracts for its highly applauded locally produced electric buses. A key time to continue promoting the region's transportation cluster, the North Country Chamber said they were pleased to host Kennedy's visit alongside Sen. Dan Stec as officials discussed future procurement opportunities and electrification, among other topics. Kennedy's visit came just one day after President Biden announced plans to make 50 percent of new cars zero-emission by 2030 while also bringing sweeping new efficiency standards for vehicles that still use petroleum. In a joint statement after that announcement, New York Department of Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos and Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez called the move "a game changer." "It puts the nation back on track in reducing emissions from the transportation sector at a critical moment. The climate crisis is here now, and steadfast leadership is necessary to protect our planet and create today the jobs of the future." "Fortunately, clean vehicle technology has matured and manufacturers are selling dozens of attractive and increasingly affordable emission-free vehicles, and have pledged to do more. New York applauds the Biden Administration and will continue to advance New York's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, building the infrastructure needed to support the growth of the electric vehicle market."
