'Operation Hard Hat' hits I-87 construction zones

CHESTERFIELD | New York's 'Operation Hard Hat' recently returned to Essex County, netting numerous tickets and infractions along an Interstate 87 construction zone. The statewide annual initiative went to the I-87 work zone in Chesterfield July 20 when troopers dressed as Department of Transportation workers looked to crack down on driving violations in the area. New York State Police joined forces with DOT during the initiative to combat reckless and distracted driving, netting seven tickets for speeding, six for cellphone use and two for no seat belts. Seven other tickets were also issued during the day-long effort. Motorists are urged to drive responsibly in work zones and obey reduced speed limits and traffic restrictions. Drivers are also asked to move over a lane when safe to do so when encountering workers along the side of the road and any vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights. As a reminder, speeding fines are doubled in work zones and two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of your driver's license, police said July 22. This initiative continues throughout the construction season.
