Smith part of Kerry Cup golf program

PERU | A change in venue due to the COVID-19 pandemic allowed a local high school golfer to play with some of the best junior-level golfers in the country and throughout the world this summer. Keegan Smith, a junior from Peru High School who placed sixth at the 2021 Section VII boy's golf tournament, was selected to play at the Kerry Cup event, which was moved from Ireland to the Lake Place Club this year. "It was a great opportunity for me and I got to meet a lot of people and see how they play the game," said Smith, who was able to take part in four days of morning instruction and afternoon competition between July 5 and July 8. "The kids I was playing against were really good, coming from Hong Kong and all over the country," he said. "They were shooting his 60s low 70s so it was interesting to compete with them." The Kerry Cup, led by Northwood Head of School Michael Maher, is a golf camp offered to 64 up-and-coming high school golfers from around the world who wish to pursue collegiate golf. Over the four days, golfers received one-on-one instruction from the top golf coaches from Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Amherst, Emory, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Richmond, Duke, Yale, and Washington University. "I hope to pursue a golf career in college and hopefully beyond that one day," Smith said.
