Axes at the ready: Plaxeburgh is officially open

PLATTSBURGH | Have you ever had the urge to go throw an ax? Well, now you can, thanks to Jason Maggy and his fiance Shay Gillette, the owners of Plaxeburgh. Plaxeburgh is the North Country's first ax-throwing recreational venue and is located in the Big Lot's Plaza at 316 Cornelia St. "I just needed something that kept me home. I wanted my own business, I wanted something that I could retire and have my own business," Maggy said. Originally introduced to ax-throwing by his brother who moved back to the area from Florida. What started out as a backyard activity soon turned into something more, as Maggy decided to take this hobby and turn it into a business. "I left a job making crazy money, but I was on the road four days a week Monday through Thursday so it was just, it was tough. Tough for family life not being around so I figured this could be something that could keep me home," Maggy said. The business is open Wednesday through Friday, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., and is $25 per person for those 18 years of age or older. For teenagers 14 years old to 17 years old the price is only $15. There is a mandatory waiver that must be signed, even for those not playing, and for 14-year-olds to 17-year-olds parental consent is required, and they must be present. It is also asked that closed-toe shoes are worn while ax-throwing. Currently, Plaxeburgh is equipped with seven lanes and is cash only, with an ATM on sight if needed. There are also arcade games and vending machines. Owning a business has been a life-long dream of Maggy who was born and raised in the area.
