Plattsburgh's mass vaccination site to shutter

PLATTSBURGH | As part of the state's downsizing of vaccination efforts and shifting focus to areas with lower vaccination rates, Plattsburgh's state-run mass vaccination site will cease operations Monday, July 19. The Plattsburgh site on Connecticut Road was one of four sites announced for closure by Gov. Andrew Cuomo July 12. Cuomo said the northern facility's closure comes amid demobilization efforts across the state based on demand, proximity to other vaccination sites and other locally-focused efforts. The North Country continues to lead the state with low positivity rates and high vaccination rates and officials said the transition to strategically close lesser used sites will allow the state to better focus resources in areas where vaccination rates remain lower. "As our vaccination efforts continue across the state, we are continuing to target communities that have lower vaccination rates and using every tool at our disposal to make the vaccine accessible to every New Yorker," Gov. Cuomo said in an afternoon update. "In line with this strategy, the downscaling of our mass vaccination sites is proceeding as planned and we are shifting resources to where they are most needed, so we can get more shots into people's arms and defeat this virus once and for all." Other sites slated for closure are The Conference and Event Center in Niagara Falls, SUNY Polytechnic Institute-Utica and Jones Beach. Operations are expected to cease following scheduled vaccinations July 19. The Plattsburgh drive-thru site came through a collaborative partnership with Clinton County to become one of the state's first mass vaccination sites in mid-January-ultimately becoming one of the main hubs for those across the state seeking vaccination. In the early days, residents from across the state, including Long Island, made the trek to Plattsburgh to receive one of the estimated 1,000 doses administered each day.
