Full steam ahead for city's summer plans

PLATTSBURGH | On June 29 the City of Plattsburgh held a press conference with its partners to announce the upcoming summer activities. Tom McNichols, the board president for The Strand Center for the Arts, kickstarted the conference by announcing a slew of events being hosted by the Strand starting with Jumpin' in July. Jumpin' in July is a free summer concert series hosted on the Arts Center lawn at 23 Brinkerhoff St. that is set to start on July 7 with Blues artist Dave Keller Band. The concert will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a cash bar and open seating. Seating is limited, as a result, it is recommended to arrive early or bring your own seat. On July 6 the MakerSpace on the second floor of the Arts Center will open its doors for an eight-week skills training course called Ready2Create, presented by ETS Staffing. Ready2Create will culminate with a grand opening of the MakerSpace to the public in late summer/early fall. Enrollment for the skills training course is limited, to reserve a spot visit etsjobs/ready2create/. "We're super excited to be coming out of this pandemic stronger than ever," McNichols went on to add, "We look forward to helping everybody out in the community, having you engaged." The Strand Center for the Arts wasn't the only one to announce a new event. Denise Duprey, owner of the Adirondack Art Museum, was at the press conference on behalf of First Friday Plattsburgh. First Friday Plattsburgh is a year-round initiative that helps promote arts and culture, local businesses, and good food that started in May. For each First Friday of the month participating downtown businesses from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. offer deals, discounts, host special events, and highlight local arts and culture. First Friday Plattsburgh is administered by The Link Arts Center LLC and co-produced by The Link Arts Center, Adirondack Art House, and members of the downtown community. The next First Friday will be on July 2 and will be a scavenger hunt with prizes, this event is sponsored by SeaComm. "It's one of the ways to try to connect all the local businesses so that, we share this beautiful city, we have a very vibrant downtown that we would like to promote," Duprey said. The Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, Ethan Vinson- a community development office employee, Sunrise Rotary, and Mayor Rosenquest were also in attendance to reiterate their already announced events. The Adirondack Coast's series of events on the lake begins on July 8 with the Bassmaster Elite Series, the Mayor's Cup Regatta and Festival held by Sunrise Rotary is on July 10, the city's 4 of July Parade and Mural dedication is on July 4, at 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively, and the Community Development Office is holding a community bike ride on July 11 at 2 p.m. to get feedback on their proposed Bike Friendly Plattsburgh report.
